The Gift of Gratitude
In the month of November, we often find ourselves thinking about being thankful and grateful. Gratitude has been shown to reduce stress and depression while improving relationships and performance...sounds like a win-win!

Poetry Contest~ Poems must be submitted by November 20~
Appelley Publishing is hosting a poetry writing contest for students in grades 3-12. Any student is welcome to submit a poem. Go to https://www.appelley.org/ to learn more about how to enter. The contest rules, frequently asked questions and directions for submissions are all on the website!
If you are mailing your entry, it must be postmarked by the deadline of November 12, 2020.
If you're submitting your entry online, the deadline is November 20, 2020.
*You may only submit 1 poem per person.
This is a FREE contest. Winners will be notified on the Appelley website on April 9, 2021. Prize winners will be notified by email.
- Over $5,000 in cash prizes will be awarded through random drawings.
- $500 prize for place in each grade division: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

With the holidays approaching, people are getting into gift giving mode. Hoagies' Gifted Education Page has you covered! In addition to being an AWESOME resource for "all things gifted", they have put together a holiday gift giving guide!

Book Lists!
Is your child struggling to find a book that is age appropriate, yet advanced enough to keep them challenged at the same time?
Here are some links to book lists for advanced learners:
Reading Beyond Lists- lists curated by librarians and adults to recommend age-appropriate titles that will challenge advanced readers.
Teacher and Parent Created List this includes book lists for students K-12 and beyond, it is a google sheet with many pages and tabs, so make sure to wait for it to load to get the full list.
Enrichment Resources- When you hear "I'm bored" check out this list!
If your kids are looking for MORE, check out this
list. It was compiled and shared by WATG (Wisconsin Assoc. for Gifted and Talented) last spring when schools closed. It has links to sites with virtual field trips, Lego challenges, TED Talks (a great way to help kids learn more about the world around them and topics of interest!), art lessons and more.
This compilation is sure to have something of interest for students provides a variety of options for students across all grade levels.
Growing Early Minds grades 2-4
The GEM program is for students in grades 2-4 who are looking for an additional challenge. These classes are virtual and will meet on Saturdays February 6-March 6. There are several great choices including coding, forensic science, engineering, creative writing and psychology! Check out the link for more information and registration fees and details

NUMATS out of level testing
NUMATS, Northwestern University Academic Talent Search, is a program that utilizes out of grade level testing to better understand student strengths and academic needs. Students in grades 6-9 who qualify may be eligible to take theACT or SAT before the grade level at which they are normally administered. The
website has information about registration, fees, testing dates and testing sites.
*The PSAT 8/9 for students in grades 3-6 has been canceled this year.
*The 2020-2021 testing schedule is now OPEN, however, due to COVID 19, things subject to change in response to ever changing safety guidelines. Testing locations are limited, please reach out if you need help navigating the site or if you have questions.

CTD, Center for Talent Development through Northwestern also offers several programs for gifted students including weekend, summer, online, and service learning programming.
Social Emotional Needs, resources for parents
Mental health and meeting the social emotional needs of our kids it a top priority.
An excellent resource for families of gifted students is SENG. Supporting Emotional Needs of Gifted is an organization that provides support through resources, articles, webinars, connections to mental health professionals, parent groups, online support groups and more. Kids who are gifted can often deal with unique issues including perfectionism, underachievement, anxiety, intensities, difficulty connecting to age group peers because of different interests or abilities, concerns with identity or fitting in. SENG offers resources and support to help navigate these concerns.
Another resource for parents is the NAGC- National Association for Gifted Children.
