Six Syllable Types

AVID-Strategy of the Week
Include at least one level 3 (also rigor/relevance blooms taxonomy) questions per lesson per subject, so kids always strive to think deeper.
Examples:
Reading: Can you predict what would have happened if the sweet old lady wouldn't have visited to help Camila? Use text evidence to support your prediction. (Case of the Stripes)
Math: Imagine you had to explain this math problem to a friend using no words, what visuals would you use to represent the problem?
SS: Could you speculate how some of the Native Americans felt after their chief decided to trade with the English colonist (Spanish conquistadors)? What feelings or concerns could arise? How would this affect the community?
Science: Hypothesize with If/Then: If you place and ice cube in a black bowl, would it melt at the same speed as an ice cube in white bowl? Explain your reasoning?

Classroom Strategy of the Week
Make positive phone calls
It’s very easy to get into the habit of calling home to parents when there is an issue to report. While these calls are necessary and worthwhile, calls home for the celebration are equally if not more important. Every parent wants to hear positive news about their child, and this reinforcement almost always makes its way back to the student. Try to make a positive call home every single day, even if it’s simply to report on a nice comment a kid made in class. This means so much to parents and students. Then I promise it will translate to their behavior in class.
