Week B Activity Schedule
Oh Deer, who will be our 'reindeer teacher' this year?
Your student was sent home with a reindeer teacher form last week! If it did not make it to you, no worries, find the digital copy below! If you need more than four tags, please just let us know! 1 present and tag = one vote for a teacher of their choice! (Somehow I, Mrs. Lassabe, have found myself in third place after day one!) Keep getting those votes (gifts) in as the gifts help a student(s) in our community!
It's Almost Christmas Party Time...
5th Grade will be hosting a TACO BAR for the last day of school before Christmas Break! Please see the sign up below and select an option if you are able to provide items for the classroom celebration. Parents ARE allowed to attend the Christmas celebration/volunteers needed to help serve the taco bar! Please email/school status with any questions! Thank you so much!!

Unit 3 Week 4 Weekly Overview
Unit 3 Opinion Writing
We are moving into week 4 of unit 3, which means after this week we will only have two weeks left in the unit. Meaning that student have 3 weeks to work on their opinion writing. We have 6 weeks each unit to complete these writings. At this point, your student SHOULD have their logical planning done, introduction paragraph (introducing their opinion and two supporting reasons) and have begun working on their second paragraph (which is explaining their first reason with examples). We worked on writing after diagnostic Thursday and Friday, so they should have a decent amount done. This is a TEST grade and their is no reason they should not have four paragraphs done in six weeks. Please check these if your student needs help. They should be titled 'Unit 3 Opinion Writing'.
CHANGE!! PLEASE READ!!
Homework Notice!
Homework will be getting checked DAILY. A student can complete the entire packet night one if they chose to still. Monday's homework will get checked Tuesday morning, Tuesday checked on Wednesday, and so on. Again, this is a completion grade and far too many are loosing easy points here.
ELA Homework
Students will be responsible for completing a weekly homework packet. We will be using MyView as our ELA curriculum again this year and it is set up into 5 units, with 6 weeks inside each unit. Week 1- 4 of the homework packets will have four pages, one for each night of the week with the exception of Friday. Week 5 homework packet will have an additional page that is focusing on writing.
Homework will be taken as a Formative (40%) grade. It will be graded for completeness, not correctness. Although, a best effort is essential for full understanding of the standards we are focusing on as the homework will directly resemble what we are focusing on during that week.
If a student chooses to work ahead on their packets, they may not fully understand what they are doing since it is set up to be completed AFTER we go over it in class that day.
Students are given MANY chances to complete homework throughout the week DURING the school day. Please make sure your child is completing their homework. This should be a very easy grade!
Weekly Study Link
https://forms.gle/GvLBwUuQrrj93AXJ9
I am placing the Google Form link here as well so guardians have an easy access to their study materials. Their study materials are on my Canvas page, accessed through Clever. Once inside Canvas on my page, the can simply click 'Modules' and that will take them to anything I have published, OR they can click 'Unit 2' and it will take them to it. Please reach out if there are questions. Again, these Google Forms VERY closely resemble the quizzes.
ELA Assessments
- Our next assessment will be on Friday, December 8th. (Formative 40%)
- This will be on Unit 3 Week 4.
- There is ALWAYS a Google Form on my Canvas page for each week that will be VERY beneficial for students to complete (can be completed more than once) and very closely resembles the questions they will see on their quizzes.
- Bonus points come from our spelling words. These can be found within the news letter, in canvas, inside your students book, and on their computer within the SAVVAS/MyView platform. Spelling is a BONUS point opportunity only, it will not hurt their grade, but an attempt is required. Up to 5 points are possible and that can greatly help boost a grade!!
UPDATED! PLEASE READ!!
iReady ELA
UPDATE: Students will be getting data papers in their red forms that show their growth between fall and winter diagnostic, as well as domains that they may be low or higher in. I will go over these with each student, but please take a look for yourself to see where help may be needed.
UPDATE: They will get a new print out of their "pathway" page as well to show what lesson they should be on, as well as how long each lesson should take. Students should have 14 passed lessons as of last week since October 9, the start of term 2. Their goal by Christmas break is 18 lesson in total. (2 lessons this week, and two lessons next week.)
Please make sure your student is completing their weekly iReady. Check their red folder for lessons that need to be completed!
- Students will be required to receive AT LEAST 46 minutes, but we are aiming for no more than 60
- Students will be responsible for having 2 PASSED lessons each week. MORE IS POSSIBLE AND ENCOURAGED. (Again, no more than 60 minutes is our goal.)
- Students will have the opportunity to complete Reading iReady daily in class for a period of time, but may need to complete lessons/minutes at home also.
- IReady reading WILL BE A GRADE. The average of your students lessons will be taken as a formative grade (%40) at progress reports as well as report cards.
- Each home room will be competing in monthly iReady challenges for incentives such as but not limited to: extra recess, ice cream party, free time, and other items.
FREE 100 DAILY GRADE BELOW!! FINAL CALL FOR POEMS!
FINAL CALL FOR POEMS!
I have to turn in poems on December 8th. I will take poems until December 6th!!
The last day to submit a poem for the poetry contest, (and the free 100), will be on Friday, December 1st! I have received several awesome poems so far!
Shout out to Keagan, Kylee, Emma M, Nautica, Joshua, Lillian, Calleigh, Kairis, Abby, William W and Makynlee for earning their FREE 100 and chance to win the STATE WIDE contest! Way to go!
Poetry Challenge!
Our students have been given the opportunity to compete in the 2023 Mississippi Poetry Project. I will attach guidelines below that explain what the project is, as well as how to participate. Students that participate by creating a poem and sharing it with me via Google Docs over their break will have their lowest daily grade (40%) changed to a 100 for term 2.
There are guidelines on which the poem has to follow. It does say no minimum, but I would like to challenge them to write at least 10 lines in their poem. This poem is supposed to represent who they are! They are tasked with the challenge of beginning their poem with the words "Today I am..." or "I am..."
You DO NOT have to email the poem to the email on the flyer, I will take care of that! Please just have them submit it to me via Google Docs. The docs should be titled as follows:
"5_DeLisle Elm_Students Last Name"
Ex: " 5_DeLisle Elem_ Jones" "5_DeLisle Elem_Wright" etc.
Would you appreciate a handmade ornament from your student?
Many students think they are "too old" to craft in 5th grade, but I love the memories and wanted to get your opinion!
MATH
LESSON 18: Multiply Fractions to Find Area
5.NBT.B.7: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction. B) Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.
NOTICE: Graded Test Papers are sent home on Mondays. Please check Gray "Parent" Folders for these tests that are going home every week. If your child does not give them to you, please ask for them!
CHANGE OF PLANS: My foot surgery was postponed until December 13. I will be at school for the next two weeks, and my last day will be December 8th. I should return February 1st. I will keep everyone posted if something changes.
WEEKLY HOMEWORK:
- HOMEWORK PACKET (Q2, W8)
- Students will have homework Monday through Thursday ALWAYS! They will be graded on completion NOT on correctness. We will check and correct homework on the following day. Homework packets will be handed out on Mondays, checked together each day in class, and then picked up on Fridays. Practice at home is a must. Please physically check homework to see if the students are working out the problems and not just marking an answer. This is imperative that you do so. I understand that some of you have not seen Math is a long time and that is okay. The students should know how to do what I have taught in class. If you notice that they are not understanding, please communicate with me what is happening at home, so we can figure it out together. Thank you for your support always. Parents, you are a very important part of their education as well. Be the best cheerleader for your child and thank you so much for what you do!
- Students will NOT get any credit if they do not show their work!
This Week's Assessments (Dates can change):

Please check Canvas frequently! Everything we are doing in class is on Canvas! All the notes are in Canvas!
FYI: The best way to get in touch with me is though my email. I rarely check my phone during the school day so if you need anything or have any questions please contact me through email.
Social Studies
There are two 2nd 9 weeks social studies exam study guides in canvas. Please take time to review at the study guides provided in the module in preparation for the exam!
