Mountain Range Principal's Update
11 October 2022
Attendance Reminder (new)
Parents/guardians should call the attendance office within two school days of the school day absent to request authorization for their student’s absence. It is the school’s authority to identify each absence as authorized (excused) or unauthorized (unexcused) per Colorado statute. Parents/Guardians are required to provide the school with an explanation of why a student is missing class. Absences due to family vacations, and/or educational experiences not sponsored by the district and non-emergency appointments will be reviewed on an individual basis by an Administrator/Dean. The student’s attendance and academic record will be taken into consideration in making a determination if the absences are authorized or unauthorized.
Students May Not Have Any Unauthorized Absences On The Day Of A School-Sponsored Activity (Athletics, Performances, Etc.) To Be Eligible For Participation. School approved activities will be considered authorized absences:
Examples of authorized absences (documentation may be required)
Absence caused by illness, injury, or physical, mental and/or emotional disability, or non-emergency medical/dental appointments (a doctor’s excuse may be required for extended absences);
Family emergencies or hardship (i.e. death in the family, etc.);
Religious observances generally recognized by an established and bona fide religious organization;
Absences required by a legal body (court, juvenile authorities or police);
Other reasons specified by law.
Examples of unauthorized absences and tardies.
Alarm clock failure or getting up late;
Taking a family member to work or school;
Traffic;
Car trouble;
Doing work for another class;
Avoiding a test or class activity; and
Babysitting.
Parents/guardians may call the school and ask for absences to be authorized without documentation. The school may authorize up to 5 days of absences in a semester without requesting documentation.
For an absence to be excused a telephone call or signed note from the custodial parent/legal guardian, medical practitioner(s), or other authorized official must be submitted within two (2) school days of the school day absent. In the case of multiple consecutive absences, the excuse must be submitted within two (2) school days of the last school day absent.
After 5 excused absences in a semester, the school may require proper documentation for any excused absence the student might have. Without documentation the absence will be marked unauthorized (unexcused). Proper documentation (see below explanation of proper documentation of absences) must be turned in within 3 school days of the absence to be considered.
Parents/Guardians should be ready to present documentation regarding any request to authorize an absence, though it will not be standard practice to request documentation for the first five excused requests made provided requests are made within two school days. Any absence reported after the next school day needs to be accompanied with proper documentation. Proper documentation must have the times and dates of the absences identified. Examples of proper documentation include court documents, medical/dental office notes, or other documents proving the absences meet the previously established criteria for authorized absences. For prearranged absences, the parents and students must get prior approval from the school.

GT News (updated)
ATTENTION ALL GIFTED AND TALENTED: (all events are listed in the GT website as well as emailed to students)
Field Trips: for Seniors/Juniors to Meow Wolf on 11/7 and for Freshmen/Sophomores to the Ropes Course at BoonDocks on 10/21: I have planned these to help meet our UIP goal of providing a space where each student has positive, nurturing relationships with adults and peers. After surveying the GT students and parents the strong evidence was that students don’t feel as connected as they would like to each other and to other GT students- so I have planned team building exercises into these field trips, as well as physics and design thinking exercises. Field trip form deadline has been extended to 10/12. Forms can be picked up, signed, and returned to the GT Office or Counseling Office.
Lunches: We had lunch today, Monday, 10/10, during periods 4,5, or 6th, where 60 students signed up and enjoyed Chick fil A while talking about PSAT/SAT tips and tricks, as well as scheduling college planning and scholarship help. If you missed this please check the GT website after the event for information or stop by my office on Mondays/Tuesdays to get information. The next lunch is Monday, 11/14 and the sign up form will be emailed to students. The last lunch for semester 1 is Monday, 12/9.
After School Event: on Wednesday, 11/9 at 1:30 PM at NorthGlenn High School Little Theater: The Adams 12 high school Gifted and Talented Advocates have come together to get a well known speaker, Ms. Patty, to come to speak with all of our high school GT students. A survey was emailed out to students- please look for this and take the survey! Lunch will be provided and students will need to arrange their own transportation. (There is a RTD bus that takes 8 minutes from MRHS to NGHS that travels down Huron.) If students cannot attend this event I will put meeting notes on the GT website after the event.
ALP Goals: Students: Here are the directions if you missed the GT meeting where we already completed the ALP. Students will need to do this in Naviance to set meaningful goals for themselves for the year. Parents/guardians: you do not need to sign anything, but students are asked to discuss the ALP goals with you, and the directions also show how to print the ALP goals if you want to look that way and/ or share with teachers. ALP goals in Naviance are DUE 10/31.
