Life at LSMSA... Outside of the Classroom
What's Been Going on at LSMSA?
Dear Parents - We hope that your student has been staying in touch and telling you about everything that's taken place during the first week of school. We've been doing our best to keep them busy and hope everyone has been having a good time and getting adjusted (or re-acclimated) to life at LSMSA.
Welcome Week Activities
The student life staff plans a variety of activities to keep students busy during the first weekend and the first week of school.
Opportunities during welcome week included karaoke, basketball, volleyball, crafts, trips to Dairy Queen, a Smash Brothers competition, a luau party, and a dance.
To help new students during the first few days of school, Ambassadors, Peer Mentors and SLAs staffed an "Ask Me" table to answer questions.

We also made many, many trips to Wal-Mart!
Expanded Orientation
New students are required to participate in expanded orientation, attending sessions in four categories: Academic & Cultural, Personal Development, Health and Safety, and Social.
These sessions give students the chance to interact with peers, participate in fitness activities, learn essential skills (how to do laundry, how to tie a tie), and develop academic abilities (how to survive that math class, how to write a lab report).
So far, approximately 20 sessions have been offered and attendance has been great!

Required Weekend
Students met in small groups to discuss this summer's required reading. Following a community dinner, students took part in our hall competition, Eagle Antics.
On Saturday, new students attended sessions on Study Power and goal-setting and the annual club fair was held following lunch.
Following club fair, students were encouraged to further discuss the reading with alumni or to participate in fitness activities sponsored by the LSMSA Wellness Network.

Staff Spotlight: Kim Cain
Kim Cain is our new personal counselor. Kim attended St. Mary's High school and continued her education at Northwestern State University. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with concentrations in substance abuse and prevention and later returned to NSU to receive a Master of Arts degree in Student Personnel Services in the Counseling track. She is a National Certified Counselor and will soon hold a licensure for professional counseling in the State of Louisiana. For the past three years she's been the therapist on an acute inpatient mental health unit, but her passion has always been working with adolescents.
Students who wish to see Ms. Cain on a regular basis must receive parental consent to do so. Please complete the counseling consent (see link below) and return it to LSMSA so we will have it on file. In the event that your student initiates a relationship with Ms. Cain, she will contact you by phone to notify you that she will be working with your student.
