January Activites
One quote I remember from college that stuck with me:
"Never do for a child what they can do for themselves."
I try to remember that in the classroom as well. When children learn a new skill or discover they can do something they didn't know they were capable of it really boosts their confidence and self-esteem. That's why I have my "try" rule. From opening a snack package to putting on shoes and coats, to cleaning up our own messes we are learning to take care of ourselves. It's coming along wonderfully! They are often surprised that they are so able.
Sometimes the walk to the playground is pretty chilly if the wind is blowing. Please be sure to send a warm coat even if they don't want to wear it to school. I offer many "power choices" during our time together. If they choose not to wear the warm coat to school perhaps they could choose to put it in their backpack in case THEY decide they need it later. :)
I am already seeing a lot of growth after just a month! I look forward to completing assessments this month to see where each child is in their development. Watch for parent/teacher conference dates next month as well.
Thank you for trusting me with your little ones!

The following pictures are of some other things we learned in January.
First introduction to Ice Castles! We learned about the properties of water and ice and what happens when rock salt and table salt, and liquid water colors are added to ice pieces.
We learned that pouring table salt between pieces sticks them together. We learned to take turns and ask nicely. We also learned that all colors mixing together makes and "brownish-grayish" color.
The colors look brighter and better in the sun without the mixed water floating around it.
Working together to match the ABC bean bags to the letters on the carpet.
There are some wonderful engineers in this class!
Penguin starts with P and they love to slide on their bellies if they live in a cold climate. Penguins in warm climates like to hop on rocks and both kinds love to swim!
It snowed on the animals in the sensory table.
I love the enthusiasm for working the fine motor muscles with beads and pipe cleaners!
Cleaning up messes is always more fun with a colorful kid broom and a friend to help!
So taking the puzzles apart was easier than putting them back together, but look at that determination!
