Feel free to forward this on to anyone at your institution who might benefit from the newsletter!
March 2017 Clerkship Redesign Newsletter
Thanks to everyone so far in moving forward with the clerkship redesign! We are looking good for the transition this May, and Serena and I have met individually with (almost) all the clerkship directors and coordinators to review the changes coming. There is an all site directors/coordinators meeting at UMMC/Fairview on April 27, details below; we hope that you can join us.
Only 37 more days until the 2017-18 school year starts!
Please contact me or Serena Sherrell directly if you have ideas, questions or concerns about the transition process. Our contact information is below.
Clinical Site Transition - Begins 5/8/17
We are finishing up our individual site meetings and will meet as a group at the upcoming all site director/coordinator meeting on April 27th, 2017 from 3-4:30pm. This event is being held at the Fairview Riverside West Building in the Paula Clayton Conference Room (F-252) on the Second Floor of the hospital in the UMN Department of Psychiatry.
We would like to welcome two new clinical sites to the clerkship, Abbott NW Hospital and Duluth-based St. Luke’s Hospital to host our medical students, starting in May 2017. These are fantastic opportunities for our students, both for traditional block clerkship and MetroPAP/RPAP Program. Many thanks to the staff below for helping to develop these teaching sites:
Abbott NW:
- Dr. Michael O’Sullivan, Site Director
- Ms. Jane Otte, Site Coordinator
St. Luke's:
- Dr. David Baldes, Site Director
- Ms. Rachel Anderson, Site Coordinator
Listed below are the core clinical experiences that the 3rd and 4th year medical students will be offered at each of the sites:
- Abbott NW: 4 weeks on adult inpatient
- AMRTC: 4 weeks on adult inpatient
- HCMC: 4 weeks on adult inpatient
- Regions: 4 weeks either on adult inpatient or day treatment
- UMMC: 4 weeks either on adult inpatient, child inpatient or day treatment
- VA: 4 weeks on adult inpatient or the consult-liaison team
- St. Luke's: 2 week bursts on adult inpatient
Lecture Series - Wed. Afternoons, 1-5:30pm
Listed below is the proposed lecture schedule for each period to give you an example of the overall structure. Thanks again to all the Lecture Champions for your efforts in developing our lecture series and crafting the lectures for our students.
Dr. Lora Wichser, current UMN Psychiatry Chief Resident and soon-to-be UMMC Site Director, has generously offered to facilitate our lecture series. She will be working with Lecture Champions and anyone interested in lecturing next year. If you are interested in lecturing to the medical students, please contact Dr. Wichser or Serena Sherrell and they can connect you to the Lecture Champions for your topic of interest.
Clerkship BlackBag Site
The University of Minnesota’s BlackBag site (blackbag.umn.edu) is the learning management portal that all medical students use to obtain information about their clerkship assignments, evaluations and grading. For the ADPY 7500 Psychiatry site page, students are able to view important site specific information and obtain guides for paper/case report writing, lecture handouts and slides, and many other links to clerkship material. Many of our changes with the transition will be reflected in our Psychiatry BlackBag site, so please feel free to sign in with your UMN user ID and password and check out our site.
Psychiatry Paper changing to Case Report
Students for the 2017-2018 school year will be writing a case report on one of their experiences during their rotation. Students will be able to view a guide and case report example on BlackBag, as well as how the case report will be graded. We are inviting students to pursue publication of their work and will have links on BlackBag to help with submissions. Please let me know if you or any of your staff are interested in mentoring a student with their case report, especially in assisting with publication.
Thank you for your work on this transition!
Best,
Susan
