Weeks of January 2nd & January 7th, 2019
- As readers, we complete Cinderella Unit of Study . We read multiple versions of Cinderella and depicted the similarities and differences between the stories.
- We discovered that almost all fairy tales have a hero, villain, magic, and a symbol or sign. They also begin with the words "Once upon a time" or Long ago."
- As a culminating activity, we watched the Disney movie version of Cinderella. Then, we compared and contrasted Perrault's original story version of Cinderella with Disney Movie.
- We read many non-fiction books about Tigers and learned that different books on the same topic can offer similar information. Yet, at the same time, the books can offer different information about the same topic.
- As non-fiction readers, we are learning that we can grow our knowledge on a topic by reading many books on that topic.Sometimes, we may be familiar with a topic but still have more to learn.
- We also read and discussed Helen Keller. We learned about her life and how she learned to read, write, and communicate even though she was deaf and blind.
- To deepen our comprehension skills, we focused on reading a selection and then determining the Main Idea and Supporting Details.
- As we begin to advance our writing skills, we "shopped" within our classroom library to find multiple non-fiction books on the topic on which we will write our next non-fiction book.
Writers' Workshop~
- As non-fiction writers, we learned to add Expert Words to our stories and provide our readers with definitions to help them understand our topic.
- We also learned to write "Twin Sentences" For example, if my non-fiction book is about bowling, I may write the following 'twin sentences:' While bowling, you will want to try and get a strike. A strike is when you knock all 10 pins down at one time.
- Also, we learned how to write good Conclusions to our non-fiction stories by restating some of the important points that we wrote about as well as leaving the reader with a good feeling about our topic.
- To enhance our Grammar skills, we learned about adjectives. Adjectives are words that describe a noun. Adjectives can be colors, sizes, shapes, numbers, as well as other describing words such as kind, pretty, etc.
Mathematicians~
- During Math, we completed and exploration
- As mathematicians, we learned the importance of having a Standard Unit of Measurement. We read and discussed the story, How Big is a Foot?
- We learned in the United States, we use the U.S Customary Unit of Measurement using inches and feet.
- Internationally, people use the Metric System. In the US scientists and doctors use the metric system as well.
- While measuring an object using both the inch and the centimeter, we noticed that the same object has a larger number in centimeters than when measured in inches. We learned that when measuring an object, the number of centimeters will always be higher than the number of inches because the notches on the centimeter ruler are closer together. Therefore, you need more centimeters than inches to cover the space. Since the notches on an inch ruler are farther apart, the number will be less.
- We also learned to play the game Target 50 using a deck of playing cards and base-10 blocks. Each player takes 2 cards and tries to make a number close to 50.Using Base 10 blocks, you show the number you made with the cards. If your represented number is over 50, on your next turn you would try to use one or both of your cards to subtract some of the base-10 blocks to get to the target number ~ 50. If you are below 50, you could use one or both cards to add base-10 blocks to reach 50.The first player to display 50 using their base-10 blocks, wins.
- During math, we also learned to play the Exchange Game to 100. Each player takes a turn rolling a die. For each number they roll, the player takes that many base-10 blocks. Once a player has 10 cubes, they trade them for a long and once they have 10 longs, the player exchanges the 10 longs for a flat ~ 100. Play continues until the first player gets 1 flat ~ 100~ and wins
- We completed our Unit 4 Test on Time/Measurement as well as our Mid-Year Cumulative Assessment.
Science~
- As Scientists, we complete an experiment to determine "Is toothpaste a solid or a liquid?"
- We added toothpaste to a bottle of water and shook the bottle contents and recorded our observations. Then, we let the mixture settle overnight.
- After the toothpaste mixture settled, we discovered that some toothpaste residue settled on the bottom, but not enough to make a layer of toothpaste.
- Next, we poured the toothpaste and water mixture in an unsealed container and waited to see if we would be able to separate the mixture. Would the toothpaste be visible and the same as before we created the toothpaste and water mixture?
- After the water evaporated from the toothpaste and water mixture, we made some observations. We determined that the toothpaste did not return to it's original state, but did make a white layer on the bottom of the bowl.
- We also determined that toothpaste can be considered both a solid and a liquid. Toothpaste has the solid properties of being able to be piled and formed into shapes. Toothpaste can also be considered a liquid because it takes the shape of its container. Although toothpaste does not flow like water, if I place a glob of toothpaste on a table, it will flatten out. Therefore, toothpaste is a combination of a solid and liquid.
Social Studies~
- During Social Studies we completed a Scholastic News learning about the creations, design and purpose of Robo-Puppy. Then we created our own robotic pet with a purpose.
Other Activities~
- Chelsea Lawrence was our Star Student of the Week. We enjoyed learning more about Chelsea!
- We celebrated our awesome behavior with a Reading Retreat!
- Also, we made snow globes for our Second Grade bulletin board...be sure to stop by and check out our creations.
- To show how we are getting involved this winter, we started our new display "We Are Snow Happy to Get Involved!" Every time we do a good deed, we write the deed on a snowflake...we are excited to watch our wintry scene 'flurry' up! See our new display below.
