Exciting news for Garfield Re-2 families!
The US Department of Agriculture recently announced that they are extending their Free Meals for Kids program through the end of December 2020 or until available funding runs out. This means all students in Garfield Re-2 can access healthy and nutritious breakfast and lunch at school for no additional cost.
Effective Thursday, September 3, all students in Garfield Re-2 schools will receive free breakfast and lunch, no matter the student's prior free, reduced, or full pay eligibility.
To see what is on the menu, please go here: https://bit.ly/2QLZTJl
Please note: Households who have not yet applied for free or reduced meals for 2020-21 are encouraged to complete an application so eligible students will receive Free/Reduced meals AFTER December 2020, or when available funding runs out under the current guidance. Forms are available here: https://bit.ly/2QLZTJl
Free and Reduced Lunch applications
Below are the free and reduced lunch forms for the 2020-21 school year. Although the USDA is providing free lunches now for all students, we have no idea how long this program will last.
If you want to be sure that you are included in the free and reduced lunch program when the current situation changes, please complete the attached forms and return to your child’s school or Sheri Edwards 215 E. 30th St., Rifle, CO 81650 or call 665-7604.
This applies to both virtual and in-person learners.
The free and reduced lunch count is one factor that indicates which schools need additional support for students. It helps provide additional resources for technology and instructional staff and much more.
More importantly, if you are in need of additional support, we encourage you to take a moment, and complete the forms below.
Garfield Re-2-Saves Money While Reducing Waste and Increasing Sustainability
Garfield Re-2 has school lunch back in full swing! The Nutrition Services Department has been able to save money while reducing waste. After careful consideration, we have selected a green plastic food eco-container, which can be washed and reused after use. This is a clamshell-shaped container that can be run through a dishwasher. After checking with the health department, we learned these containers are appropriate for our use. In addition to preventing tons of Styrofoam from entering the landfill, we are also creating a $100,000 in savings to our department. This is a win-win for the environment, students’ safety and our food services budget. Other efforts being discussed include some schools wanting to do composting feeding gardens with the compost product.
Important information for bus riders
Cooler temperatures are here.
The weather is getting colder & the bus windows are still going to be open. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately!
Due to the current limitations on bus capacity, unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate students riding home with friends this year. There are no exceptions to this practice at the moment. We apologize for any inconvenience. We will re-evaluate as physical distancing requirements relax. Thank you for your patience as we work through this process.

What is the P-EBT Program?
If your child was eligible for free or reduced-price meals last school year at a school that participates in the National School Lunch Program, or if they attended a school where all students eat breakfast and lunch for free, they are eligible to get P-EBT. Immigration status does not matter for P-EBT and P-EBT is not part of the public charge rule. All information submitted is confidential. P-EBT provides your family with funds to help buy food. These funds are available because schools were closed this spring due to the pandemic. You can receive up to $279 per eligible child to stretch your food budget AND continue getting summer meals at the same time!
Contact Shari Edwards at 665-7604 for more information.
