Social Emotional Learning: Asking for what you need or want
Your child learned about how to ask for something they need or want. In order to ask for help, we need to face the person we are speaking to and use a strong, respectful voice. I reminded students that I will encourage them to try on their own first, but then I am happy to help them. This applies to things like opening a snack or zipping up a coat. In case of an emergency, they should ask for help right away. This applies if someone is being unsafe like hitting or kicking.
Library Books
Your child brought home their first library book this week. Books go home on Monday and should be returned by Friday. Because of the long weekend, books that went home this week can be returned next week. I left all library books in backpacks today. Students have been reminded that they should take good care of these books just like they would from any library.
Zones of Regulation
Students learned about Zones of Regulation this week. You may have heard your child talking about what zone they are in. The idea behind zones is that your child is able to identify their emotion and figure out how to get back into the green zone. Here are some of the feelings we may feel in each of the zones.
Blue: tired, sick, bored
Green: ready to learn, calm, happy, good mood
Yellow: excited, silly, worried, frustrated
Red: mad, scared, mean
None of the zones are bad. However, as a class we agreed is it easiest to learn when we are in the green zone. The zones are posted in the classroom, and I also wear a small wheel on my lanyard where students can show me how they are feeling and identify their zone. The class has done so well with the concept so far. We are getting into talking about different feelings which will help students better identify how they are feeling.
Halloween Party
We are still in need of someone to bring in and facilitate a game for our PM party. Let me know if you are interested. Also, please let me know if your family does not celebrate Halloween. More information about our parties will be sent out soon.
Be Safe. Be Caring. Be Ready. It's the Willow Way!
