Cougars ROAR: TEMS Community News
Issue III: November 23, 2022
Principal's Message
We are officially past the first quarter of the school year. Thank you to families who attended the fall parent-teacher conferences. The relationship between home and school is one of the most important ones for us to foster.
On Monday, November 14th TEMS students celebrated World Kindness Day by sharing gratitudes and appreciation with each other. Many students sent cards to children at CCMC and to seniors at the South Windsor Senior Center. Students also recognized bus drivers and substitutes with cards in honor of their respective national recognition days this month.
Sixth grade students were able to observe lunar soil/rock samples as well as meteorites that Mrs. Roy was able to obtain on loan from NASA. Students really enjoyed being able to hold and see items from space. This was especially exciting as this event happened close to the time of the Artemis Rocket launch!
We are looking forward to many exciting events this December. The TEMS Chorus concert is scheduled for December 5th and the Orchestra concert will be held on December 12th. Also, consider joining the TEMS band at the Hartford Wolfpack game on December 9th where they will perform the National Anthem (tickets here, note- band members will be given a separate link).
As we head into the Thanksgiving break I know I certainly have a lot to be thankful for. I am honored to come to work at TEMS each day. It is a privilege to work alongside incredible teachers in a building full of gloriously unique middle school children. This community continues to impress me with our shared commitment to educating the whole child. I wish each of you the best as you enjoy the long weekend together. Thank you!!

On this day, students engaged with 5 different career speaker presentations by outside professionals followed by a variety of other career based activities and assignments with their team teachers. This program aligns with School Counseling’s curriculum model under the “Career and Future Planning” domain. The other two domains covered by School Counselors are “Academic Advisement and Personal/Social Health”.

Teaching and Learning: News from Our Instructional Coaching Team
Mrs. Alison Fetta and Mr. Kent Besocke are instructional coaches that support faculty and staff in providing instruction that meets the needs of our diverse learners at TEMS.
How can I motivate my child to embrace struggles and mistakes, especially with new learning?
As Frederick Douglass once stated, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” This reminds us that working through obstacles builds resilience. To help support your young learner at home, take a look at the following suggestions:
Encourage productive struggle.
Remind your child that setbacks are part of the learning process.
Model a mindset of curiosity and discovery.
Create a “not yet” mentality, especially when your child says “I can’t do it.”
Praise your child for problem-solving skills rather than just intelligence.

Athletic News
The fall season has wrapped up and we have a lot to celebrate. The Timothy Edwards boys soccer team made it to the final game of the Capitol Region Athletic League (CRAL) against the Illing Rams. While they didn’t take home the championship, we are so proud of the season they had- finishing with a record of 11-2-1. The TEMS girls soccer team capped off a remarkable season with a big CRAL final win over Ellington with a score of 4-0. The girls cross country team celebrated a 5th place finish at the state championship meet.
We are excited to begin winter sports- registration closes today (11/23) for basketball and cheerleading. Tryouts for winter sports are all next week. This information will be shared on TETV News and on the TEMS Winter Athletics webpage.
