We’re excited to be able to bring back the GearUp4Success conference to Flint!
The underlying goal of our program is to significantly increase the number of students who will graduate and give them the skills and mindset to succeed after high school. When we understand that intelligence is not limited, we succeed like never before.
Our speakers specialize in the development of a growth mindset—the belief that our abilities are not fixed but can be developed through passion, education, and persistence. They will provide you with the concepts and tools to help you foster a growth mindset in yourself and in those you serve.

MOTT MIDDLE COLLEGE MAVERICK MADRIGALS
Director: Dr. Matthew Packer
The Maverick Madrigals are one of two choirs offered at Mott Middle College. Students of all grade levels are eligible, but the bulk of the students are 3 rd – 5 th year students and previous choir experience is required. One of the strengths of the tare group is in creating their own harmonies to the songs they sing and blending (“mashing up” ) two or more songs to form an original piece.
This unique level of originality and creativity is encouraged by their director, Dr. Matthew J. Packer. Dr. Packer also Choral Director at Mott Community College and teaches Piano Proficiency and Vocal Techniques. He has found ways to bring the MMC and MCC Choirs together and is especially gratified when MMC singers find their way into MCC music classes to further their passion and interest.

Travis Thomas
Any beginning improviser will tell you that the concept of “yes, and” is the basis and foundation of improvisation. For the past 17 years, I have tried to embody and live a life of “YES, And.”
Live YES And…is me. This is my passion. This is my life! When I took my first improvisation class back in 1998 I was hooked. I had always wanted to try improvisation, but never had the time (or courage) to make it a priority. But there I was, in a new city watching these amazingly talented performers create stories out of thin air, and I knew…I had to do that!

Isaiah Oliver
Isaiah Oliver refuses to become a stranger in his own community.
Named fifth president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint (CFGF) early this year, the north side native says he’ll remain accountable to friends and neighbors in the city that nurtured him.
“My life is in Flint,” says Oliver, “and every time I had an opportunity to leave there was something else here I was offered.”
Only five months into leading one of the community’s key organizations at a crucial time in the city’s history, Oliver wants others to recognize what it has to offer. Rebuilding residents’ trust in the infrastructure and boosting confidence in Flint’s return to prosperity will be critical to his support of CFGF’s nutrition, literacy and neighborhood revitalization goals.
“Trust is everything, man,” says Oliver, who, at 36, is the youngest president in the foundation’s 29-year history and its first from Flint.

James Mayfield
I was born in Flint, Michigan to a cocaine/heroinaddicted mother and a drug peddling father. Although I have never taken drugs, from birth I dealt with the horrible reality of being born addicted. As a crack baby, the doctors had to give me drugs to wean me off to keep me alive. Growing up in the Inner City of Flint was a real challenge. I had to deal with poverty, crime, racism and also abuse. Since I was a product of my environment at an early age, I assumed that the only choices I had were to work for General Motors, sell drugs, pimp, or be a criminal. After a little while of living in the inner city, I moved on to foster care homes...

Paul Artale
My name is Paul Artale and I am work-life and motivational speaker based out of Swartz Creek, Michigan. As a keynote presenter, I speak for organizations that want to light a fire in people on how to perform at their peak and create a healthy balance between work and home. As a career coach, I work one on one with people who want to discover what makes them tick and live a life worth living.
In fact I wrote the book, The 2-Year Old’s Guide to Work-Life Balance. Presentation attendees share they are more focused on what matters, inspired to reach for more, and implement ideas that are practical and immediately accessible.
On a personal note, I played defensive end for the University of Toronto and off the platform my coaches include my wife Sherri, my son Alessio, and my daughter Sofia.

Kiara Tyler
It's hard for people to stay calm about Kalm Clothing LLC, whether it's Grammy-nominated rappers posting photos of themselves wearing the company's clothes, or normally staid lawyers, venture capitalists and advisers singing the praises of its 25-year-old founder and CEO, Kiara Tyler, a tenant in the Ferris Wheel Innovation Center in downtown Flint and a participant in its 100K Ideas business development program.

Growth Mindset:
The belief that we can grow and better ourselves every day and that intelligence, aptitude, and resilience are not something that are fixed at birth. A necessary ingredient of Growth Mindset is a willingness to make the effort required for a life of learning.
Empathy:
Awareness of the feelings and emotions of other people. Empathy goes far beyond sympathy, which might be considered ‘feeling for’ someone. Empathy, instead, is ‘feeling with’ that person, through the use of imagination.
Action:
Doing what’s required to achieve our goals. Sam did not use his Progeria as an excuse for inaction. Instead, he overcame barriers and was an active leader at school and in his community.
Responsibility:
The willingness to take on and fulfill obligations that contribute to the betterment of our community as well as ourselves.
Each GEAR will be defined and explained through real-life examples, as well as discussed and practiced by students through various activities. When used together, these components provide the GEARs that will start the process of building true leaders.
