Poplar Grove Post
March 2018
NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Hello,
The 3rd quarter is quickly coming to a close as March 9th is the last day of the quarter. On February 22, we hosted the annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game. I am proud to say the faculty remains unbeaten! Thank you to all that played, helped, cheered, laughed, and fell down. Admission to the game was a canned good. As a result of your generosity, we collected a BUNCH of canned goods and $219.25 for Graceworks!
I would like to thank students, parents, and teachers for the hard work displayed in the first three quarters of school. I know the 4th quarter of school will be full of fun activities, but it will also be chock-full of learning opportunities. Please see below for some important dates during the month of March.
March 16 - Report Cards Issued
March 20 - School iGuardian Presentations
March 21 - Spring Pictures

IN THE NEWS:
A new prediction based on a recent study indicated that 57% of children currently in the US, could be obese by the time they turn 35. Concerned parents can make efforts to prepare and provide healthier meals at home, plan scheduled meal times, limit screen time, encourage sports participation and more active leisure time, instead of sedentary activities.
REMINDERS:
I am seeing students with respiratory viruses, including influenza, strep throat and the stomach virus. As a reminder, parents please keep your children home until they have been fever free for 24-48 hours, without fever reducing medicine and when THEY ARE FEELING BETTER FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS! Sending your child to school too soon after some of the viruses circulating in the community, predisposes them to relapse and the development of secondary complications from their illness.

GRADE LEVEL NEWS:
5TH GRADE NEWS:
Fifth Grade continues to move along preparing your children for Middle School life as 6th-8th graders. We continue to work hard in our classes and encourage each other through the struggle that sometimes comes up in lessons we're learning.
We finally reached the hill top in math and completed our unit in fractions, but we continue to visit and revisit these concepts regularly in our Spiral Reviews. We've started working in Algebra, and it's been a fresh change of pace.
Science classes are working on tracking the constellations, and they're using a fun, sticky, yet yummy approach to marking them:). Marshmallows always make a lesson more enjoyable!
We will be going on our next Field Trip on March 7 on a Walking Tour of Nashville to hear about the history of Nashville and it's contributions to the Civil War and beyond. We will be walking past a building where the center of the Slave Trade Auction Box centered town. I imagine it will be a hallowing place and an incredible reminder of the ugly in our world. As educators, it's our hope that we learn from these mistakes so NEVER to make them again.
In the photo, kids are swallowing up the books Wonder and A Wrinkle in Time. If you haven't seen the movie Wonder, I highly recommend it for the whole family. The new movie for A Wrinkle in Time comes out this Spring and will be another great family movie.
They continue to inspire our team with their ideas and perseverance. We are so lucky to be a part of their growing up!
Just a quick reminder that slime isn't allowed in the 5th grade hall. The 5th grade team would like to ask that students leave the slime at home. Thank you!

6TH GRADE NEWS:
Sixth grade students in Mrs. Hayes' Language Arts class are reading The City of Ember and The Giver. Both novels are about dystopian societies that assign jobs to 12 year olds. Classes participated in "Assignment Day" to receive their jobs from the Mayor of Ember and the Chief Elder from The Giver. Dr. Orman enthusiastically played both these roles. Students then wrote about their job requirements and were allowed to apply for a new job. Roles assigned included a variety of jobs of everything from trash sifter to engineer. The students enjoyed Ember trail mix and Can You See the Color trail mix as they completed their written assignments.

EXTRACURRICULAR NEWS:
Spelling Bee
Our school-wide spelling bee was held on Friday, February 2, with thirteen students competing for the title of school champion. After ten rounds of fierce spelling, only two spellers remained. 7th grader Matthew Hardy and 6th grader Ella Holt continued the word volley until round 15, when Ella correctly completed the round to earn the title of school champion. Ella will represent Poplar Grove Middle School in the Tennessee regional spelling bee on Saturday, March 10 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

Duckling Hatching
EGGciting things are happening in Mrs. Nash’s classroom! Her students are hatching their own duckling eggs this month. The eggs were placed in an incubator on February 2nd and are expected to hatch on March 2nd. Mrs. Nash’s students have been documenting this experience in daily journals and learning all about the hatching process. A big focus has been on the candling process. Candling is a method used to show detail through an egg shell. The students have candled the eggs over multiple days, which has allowed them to see the embryos inside of the eggs. This has been such a cool experience! On Friday, March 2nd, Mrs. Nash’s class will hold a “hatching” party to celebrate the big day! Stay tuned for updated pictures of our baby ducklings.

FSSD VOLUNTARY PRE-K INFORMATION FOR THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR
What is the Franklin Special School District/State of Tennessee Voluntary Pre-K Program? Voluntary Pre-K provides a high quality educational program through an active learning approach. Young children learn skills at their own level in ways meaningful to them. A holistic approach to Kindergarten readiness prepares children socially, mentally, emotionally, and physically. If you walk into a Pre-K classroom you may see children playing house, putting on a puppet show, or building a miniature town with blocks and little people. Experienced, knowledgeable, understanding teachers and staff guide students through music, stories, songs, and play. All of these fun activities help children develop academic and social skills as they play.
Your child may qualify for Voluntary Pre-K during the 2018-2019 school year.
To be eligible children must have been born on or between August 16, 2013 and August 15, 2014, live in The Franklin Special School District, and qualify in one of several ways.
The Tennessee Department of Education Office of Early Learning requires school districts to first serve students who are economically disadvantaged. Space permitting, students may be served who have disabilities, are identified as English Language Learners, are in state custody, or are identified as educationally at-risk for failure due to circumstances of abuse or neglect.
Children attend Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Monday through Friday for a six hour day. Each class is limited to 16 children working with a teacher and paraprofessional. The program is free of charge although parents are required to provide transportation.
For more information call any FSSD Elementary School or Lee Kirkpatrick at (615) 591-2802 and ask to be placed on the list to receive application materials. Applications will be mailed to families requesting information no later than February 23. .
Voluntary Pre-K has proven to be a valuable element in Franklin Special School District’s commitment to provide excellence in teaching and learning for all. If you have questions please contact:
