Reader's Workshop
Students are having their first book club discussions on their historical fiction books this week. We are blown away by their great discussions and students are really starting to show their deeper level thinking!
Just a reminder about book clubs. Each student has a calendar outlining which days they are meeting. On their meeting days, they need to be prepared (pages read, 8 or more think marks, and a thick question). Two days after their meeting date, they have a write long due. Each day students have close to 45 minutes - 1 hour to work on their book club in class.
Writer's Workshop
The students are starting to compare and contrast themselves to someone else in the class, they are learning how to funnel through their topics and how to format their writing while expanding their thoughts. After, we will be comparing and contrasting characters in our book club books.
Math
We have started working with decimals. This week and next week we will be focusing on ordering, comparing and rounding decimals. Then, we will be going through all of the operations with decimals. Students will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.
Science
We will soon be starting to learn about the human body system. We will also be doing our human growth and development the week of April 9th. We will send a letter home to give you more information.
Extras
BizTown
The parent volunteer slips will be coming home FRIDAY, March 2nd. Please send back ASAP to secure your spot. We are taking 11-14 volunteers. The date of BizTown is March 26th and volunteers need to be available from 8:45-3:00. An online training is also required. More information regarding this in the letter being sent home.
ABC Books
Please refer to the ABC book timeline to help keep your child on track with their due dates.
The students need to have working headphones everyday at school. *This is especially important when we begin Forward Testing.
Wax Museum
Come visit anytime between 1:30-3:15 on March 23rd. On this day your child will need to dress like their historical figure. Please do not feel the need to go out and purchase costumes. Look around the house, ask relatives, check thrift shops, etc. for help! Bringing items to set on the table to display with their book is appropriate as well.
