Sioux City North
What you need to know.
Message from the Principal
North High School was "Food Truck Friday" before Food Truck Friday was cool. For the past few years, we have held a Food Truck and Street Dance on the Friday prior to the start of school. It has taken a few different shapes throughout the years. We have used it to target freshman to make them more comfortable in attending high school, to build school spirit by teaching cheers and class chants, and to have upper classmen interact with underclassmen. This year, we want parents! We will be welcoming North High Alumn Tyson Sanchez to the event and his food trucks Dagas and Taste!
We want parents to come to North High School, have supper together, and meet each other and staff. In our fast paced world and lives, we do not always take time to slow down and have face-to-face conversations. On August 17, 2018, we will serve food from 5:00-7:00 PM. Feel free to bring your children along as well.
Our goals are simple:
- Get more parents participating in and attending school activities and events.
- Create opportunities for parents to meet and have conversations with staff members and administration about the school.
- Allow parents to meet the families of the children with whom their sons and daughters attend school.
After the Meet and Greet, students will be invited to stay for a "Street Dance" outside in the drive through (weather permitting) from 7-10 PM. This is will be an informal event where people can meet one another and have access to administration for questions and answers.
On Tuesday, August 21 we will hold the official "Back to School Night" for all students. We will have a short informational meeting that night targeting parents of freshman and new students. This is open to everyone. This will be a brief overview of the school and a large group question and answer session.

Registration for the 2018-2019 School Year
Beginning on July 17th, 2018 parents/guardians can begin verifying student information for the upcoming 18-19 school year. It is critical for families that have students continuing in the district to verify that the district has the most up to date information for their children in case of an emergency or a safety situation. The Online Information Verification link will be opened on July 17th and closed on August 23rd, 2018. We are asking parents/guardians to complete the Online Information Verification using the link located in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Please contact the office if you need assistance with this process. Once the link is open, the school will send multiple messages with information.
On-site registration will be held on August 14-15 from 10:00-6:00 PM. Regardless of in person registration or registering online at home, all registration will be done using a computer as in previous years. If you register online at home, ALL Documents and opportunities to pay fees and lunch accounts will be online. If you register online, you do not have to accompany your son or daughter for them to come to school, take their school picture, and obtain a laptop. However, you son/daughter will be asked to inspect and sign off on damages on the laptop. The laptops will be brand new this year and our plan is for students to keep the same laptop year after year.
For those choosing to register in person, please understand that the process will take longer. When registering online, you will register all of your students (regardless of attending different schools). You will only need to do this process one time.
Stay Up-To-Date on School Activities
In order to provide the most up-to-date and timely information for parents and community members, the schools in the Missouri River Activities Conference have banded together to house all interscholastic events in one calendar system. Our Activities Director, Chris Koch, and his assistant Shelly Larson update the calendar and rosters as changes occur. The information is subject to change. Besides the obvious weather related changes, game can change due to umpire or referee availability, schedule conflicts due to make up events, or other emergency issues. Changes are the result of these types of things happening at either school.
The Activities Directors of the conference schools meet monthly to verify schedules. Each team is allowed a specific number of games/competitions and they work together to ensure everyone has a full schedule. Unfortunately, sometimes due to our location, area schools choose not to pick up games/competitions with larger schools.
Each newsletter has a link (at the bottom) to this website. You can visit the MRAC Conference Page by clicking here. When you visit the page, you can download the app, import the calendar to your calendar, or create an account to receive notifications of upcoming events or changes for your activity.
Earn Your Silver Cord!
Who is Eligible?
All North High students who would like to help the community and others.
How Do I Qualify to receive the Silver Cord for Graduation?
Students must complete a minimum of forty hours of committee-approved community service in their sophomore, junior and senior years at North High School. You cannot average 40 hours over the three year span; forty hours must be completed within each school year. Our goal is to instill the idea of community service as a life-long pursuit. If students successfully complete the amount of hours necessary they will receive a silver cord to wear at commencement similar to the gold cords worn by academic award winners.
Important Details:
Documentation: Students MUST document all service activities on the Silver Cord Award Form provided by North High – one form for each site or project, signed by a supervisor at the site. (A note confirming the students’ service signed by the supervisor at the project is also acceptable. It must be attached to the Silver Cord Form). Forms can be submitted to Ms. Larson at North High School at any time during the year. For sophomores and juniors: if you don’t turn in forms by the end of the school year, you may submit them at any time during the following fall. There is no specific deadline for underclassmen to submit forms, although it is best to turn them in as soon as they are completed. Seniors should submit all Silver Cord forms by May 2nd of senior year. Forms may be picked up from the office or can be printed using the links below.
Summer Service: Service hours earned during the summer after the academic year may be applied toward EITHER the prior or following year – student’s choice. (For example, the summer after the sophomore year can apply toward either the sophomore or junior 40 hour requirement or divided between the two as needed). It is recommended that all summer projects be pre-approved in writing by Mrs. Larson or a principal to make sure they are acceptable. Summer service that complies with the Silver Cord criteria will be accepted even if students were not able to submit pre-approval forms. Students should pick up blank Silver Cord Award forms before the end of school to use for documentation summer service. Please keep completed forms until you return to North in the fall. The Silver Cord Adviser will be responsible for keeping students’ Silver Cord files.
Important details regarding the Silver Cord Award:
Acceptable service activities: Silver Cord hours must be for providing a SERVICE or meeting a clear NEED for a non-profit agency, church, school, park, charity program, fundraiser or community event. The service should be “above and beyond” one’s usual scope of involvement and could be part of required service for a program such as Scouts or religious education. While some organizations meet during the school day, only hours outside of school time could be applied to Silver Cord service. If there is any question about whether a specific volunteer experience meets the criteria of “providing service” or “meeting a need” students should get prior approval from the Silver Cord Committee by submitting a pre-approval form. The Silver Cord Review Committee makes final determinations regarding service.

Attention Senior (Class of 2019) Parents! Immunization Information
Iowa Immunization law requires that all students entering 7th grade have both a Meningococcal vaccination and a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) vaccination before school starts in the fall.
Iowa law requires that all students entering 12th grade have a Meningococcal vaccination. The requirement is 2 doses of meningococcal (A,C,W,Y) vaccine for students in grade 12, if born after September 15, 1999; or 1 dose if received when students are 16 years of age or older are required before school starts in the fall.
The Tdap requirement has been in place since the 2013/14 school year and requires a booster dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and acellular Pertussis containing vaccine for students entering 7th grade, regardless of the interval since the last Tetanus/Diphtheria containing vaccine. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that make it hard to breathe.
The meningococcal vaccine has been required since the start of the 2017/18 school year. Meningococcal disease is a life threatening illness that is caused by bacteria that infects the brain, blood, and spinal cord. It easily spreads in crowded settings. The vaccine is required prior to both the 7th and 12th.
What does this mean for you? You will need to call your physician’s office to make an appointment for these vaccines. You will need to check your home records or call your physician’s office to see what your student’s status is. If you do not have insurance, you can contact the Siouxland District Health Department at 279-6119. Please send a copy of your student’s updated immunization record to the school nurse prior to the first day of school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
School Safety Update
Earlier this year, the governor signed Senate File 2364, a bill that requires public and non-public schools to develop - and practice - confidential, high quality safety and emergency plans for each classroom building no later than June 30, 2019.
Sioux City Schools and North High School have had safety and emergency plans in place for some time. Each year, we have practiced a variety of scenarios during the school day. We have not always informed parents that this is in place or that we have completed the drills. After the shooting in Parkland, Florida, we committed to parents that we would communicate with them after each of these types of drills. This would allow for parents to have conversations with their sons/daughters about the event. It also was to provide a piece of mind so parents know we are practicing for the unthinkable.
The new law requires collaboration between the school and county safety officials. This is also in place. All secondary schools have a School Resource Officer (SRO) who is also a Sioux City Police Officer. The officer is an active member of the safey team and prepares along with the school during any drill. Althought it is in place, it can always be stronger. We will continue to collaborate with community partners for drills.
This summer, we have been reviewing our building specfic plans and protocols to ensure safety and reduce chances of threats. We are committed to bolstering the safety for buildng access and are reviewing protocols for how students and guests enter the building. We are considering tightening student access to vehicles for off campus classes and are moving ahead with relocating programs in the school to place the main office at the front doors which will require all guest access to first enter the office. This will take some time to complete. Additionally, all school staff will recieve a refresher training in "S.A.V.E. Yourself" Training at the start of the school year. There will be follow up training specific to each building as well in the fall.
School safety is everyone's businesses. If you hear of a threat or have a suspicioun of one, never hesitate to inform law enforcement or the school. Each report is investigated by the school and local law enforcement and handled accordingly. Everyone must treat each incident as if it were to happen. We all want safe schools and it takes all of us working together.
