Counselor News from Ms. Andes!

September Counselor Lessons

September begins Counselor Lessons in ALL classrooms! All students in our building will be creating a Power Plan during our first counselor lesson. A Power Plan is a list of 3-5 things that we know help to calm us down or help us feel better when we have big emotions. All students are asked to think about what feelings or emotions they have during the school day. Then they are asked to think about when they have that feeling what comforts them. We are unique and like different things, so everyone’s Power Plan is going to look different. When I feel sad, I feel comforted by hugging a stuffed animal. However, when I feel angry, I need to step away and get a drink of water. All students have learned how breathing changes the part of your brain that is in control, so EVERYONE has a deep breathing strategy as their #1 thing on their Power Plan. The Power Plans will be hung up in their lockers, so we know where to go during the day when a student struggles with a big feeling and is unable to communicate their needs. Ask your students how you can create Power Plans at home!

The second Counselor lesson for grades K-2 will be talking about emotions and feelings. Students will learn to identify their own emotions as well as recognize what others are feeling by their facial expressions. Grades 3-5 will be taking the student Panorama SEL survey. This is a 40 question survey that asks students how they feel they use social-emotional skills. This survey measures Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Grit, Growth Mindset, Classroom Effort and Self-Efficacy. This self-report is used to help us determine which students need extra support in any of the measured areas.

If you have any questions about the Counseling Curriculum it is posted on the Park hill website HERE. You may also call or email me with any questions.
