Even More Important! Last chance to help us improve!
Your help is needed! I am running this again because we have not received enough responses to consider the survey a valid measurement. Thank you if you have already completed it. If you have not, you can use this link or the one I emailed last week. If you have any issues accessing the survey, please contact me for assistance.
Family Survey
It is very important that we have as many families as possible complete this survey. The school needs a minimum response rate of 25% for the data to be meaningful. Here is some information:
- It is anonymous, but because there is no “login” for the survey, it should be completed once you begin.
- Your responses are automatically recorded so you will be unable to return to the survey without starting over.
- If you the the survey before completing it, we will only have the answers you completed.
You do not need to complete more than one survey if you have multiple students in our school. The survey takes about 15 minutes. Click this link to access it.

Guidance - Mrs. Whatley
This week, the guidance counselors visited grade 12 English classes to review important information about exploring options, college applications, financial aid, job shadows, and career exploration. The topics were a continuation of the work we have been doing with seniors since our class visits in September. Students had an opportunity to ask questions and spend some time on the program Virtual Job Shadow. Be sure to see this copy of the handout!
Thank you to the parents and students that came out last night for the College Financing Seminar. A representative from MEFA presented a wealth of information on the college financial aid process. If you missed the presentation you can have your student pick up a handout of the information from the guidance office or log onto www.mefa.org and located the college financing PowerPoint in the resources.
Second quarter progress reports were distributed to all student during last period today. A copy of the progress report can also be found under the E-portfolio section of the Plusportal accounts. Please review your student's progress. Second quarter is currently scheduled to end on January 19th, pending any snow days.

warrior cries!
Warrior cries are shout outs to staff and students here at Seekonk High School. They are our way of recognizing hard work, creative thinking, and characteristics that make us proud to be part of this community. Please contact Dr. Jones if you wish to give a "warrior cry" to someone!
Lou Gerbi for... "being a consummate professional. He is extremely organized and efficient. He completes tasks such as inventory, budget, and exams immediately. And, he does it all pleasantly with a smile!" - Angela Cunard
Ed Cunard for... "anytime I have a concern and have to cover a class in an hurry, I always think of Ed Cunard first and he is always willing to help in anyway. It probably isn't fair to Ed, however, I know I can count on him and I wanted you to know he always steps up to the plate. Thank Ed for all you do!" - Mrs. Chianese
Kayleigh Medas for... "was sitting in lunch when she recognized that a student was very upset about a mistake he had made with his lunch. She immediately went into the kitchen and worked with the staff to get him a new lunch. Her awareness, quick thinking, and compassion avoided a stituationin which a student could have become distressed. Instead, she stepped in, fixed the issue, and helped calm the student down. For this, she certainly deserves a shout out and overall thanks for her actions." -Mrs. Sicard
Mike Petrucci for... "becoming Seekonk High school's newest Advance Placement Authorized teacher. His work preparing and submitting the AP Psychology course syllabus was reviewed and approved by the College Board. He becomes the 10th SHS AP authorized teacher." - Mrs. Whatley
Kim Pellerin... "Teachers are expected to model what they want from their students…being able to think on their feet and act in such a way that will make a difference. Thank you is to Mrs. Kim Pellerin, who rose to the occasion with such grace and composure, assuredness and urgency, in a time when others may have faltered. Again, thank you for going above and beyond what is truly is expected."

Seekonk High School Job Shadow Program
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
We welcome professionals from all fields to come forward; currently, however, we have three specific areas in which students would like to make contact. We are looking for a social worker and an engineer. If you or anyone you know works in one of those areas and are willing to help a student investigate career paths, please reach out to Mrs. Calverley, Career Specialist, at 508-336-7272, xt.62447.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.
Questions? Please contact Janet Fitzgerald, Transition Coordinator, 508-336-7272, ext. 62459

SBIRT screening will occur December 11,12,and 13th for grade 9 students. Parents received a letter explaining this state mandated screening with 8th grade report cards and on the first day of grade 9. If you choose to have your child opt out of the screening, please submit an email before Dec. 11, 2017 to Mrs. Rok. There is a link explaining this mandate and the state’s fight to combat the opioid crisis. There will be information about substance use and abuse for parents to read and open up a discussion with their teen.
The Polished Program, a dental cleaning program, is coming to Seekonk High School on January 10, 2018 during the school day. If you would like to have your son/daughter receive a free dental cleaning, please email Mrs. Rok. Forms are in the health room or main office.
The MDPH and CDC have provided fact sheets and information of “Talk with Your Teen About E-cigarettes”.”In 2016, the FDA established a rule for e-cigarettes and their liquid solutions. Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are now subject to government regulation as tobacco products, including the requirement that both in-store and online purchasers be at least 18 years of age.” For more information, please see the link and visit the FDA’s webpage, The Facts on the FDA’s New Tobacco Rule.
