Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 12th February 2021
All the Best Sally!
THANK YOU Sally
School Update
Dear Parents and Carers
I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to everyone in our school family for their support and encouragement over the last half term. At school we really have appreciated the wonderful way that the vast majority of our parents and carers have helped the children access their remote learning on a daily basis and have kept children going!
Engagement
Each day staff have kept a register of pupil attendance, whether that be in school or at Zoom sessions, and they have maintained a record of how children have engaged with their daily work. We have been so impressed with the way that children across the school have shown such a positive attitude to their learning and have demonstrated increased independence and resilience during these challenging times. Our tracking shows that 88% of children have engaged more than 90% of the time and an impressive 65% of children had 100% engagement!
Spring - first half term engagement
Year 6 engagement 96.1%
Year 5 engagement 94.8%
Year 4 engagement 90%
Year 3 engagement 93.5%
Year 2 engagement 92.4%
Year 1 engagement 92.5%
Thank you to everyone in our school family. We do hope that you are able to have a well-deserved rest over the half-term break.
Returning to school
After half term, in many of the classes, teachers will be in school to check on learning, provide some face to face teaching and hopefully begin preparing for the full return of all children.
At school we are still very hopeful that the government will announce that schools will be fully open on 8th March.
Have a great half term.
Kind regards
Steven Holmes

Coming soon! World Book Day
If you haven't had chance to watch Mrs McCormick's worship on Monday you will have missed some information about this year's World Book Day on Thursday 4th March. You can still watch this worship by clicking on the link below.
Mrs McCormick's Worship on Reading
As this year we won't be dressing up to come to school we are asking you to 'Dress a Potato' instead! Take the ordinary spud and transform it into a book character. Have a bit of fun over half term and send your photo to your class teacher and to emccormick@riponcathedral.n-yorks.sch.uk This isn't a competition and is just for fun but we look forward to seeing your photos.
On 4th March there will also be book related activities set by the class teachers.
Mrs McCormick also asked for book recommendations that we can share with others. A big 'Well Done' to Alice in Year 5 who was the first to recommend. Here is her recommendation for Eragon.
I have been reading Eragon. I am now on the second book Eldest. I love dragons, magic, elves and fantasy/mythology.
The best character is Saphira the dragon, she is very clever and funny. I also like Arya the elf, she is cool.
The hardest bit of these books is that it uses the elven language but it has a handy pronunciation guide at the back!
There are 4 books in the series and I am looking forward to reading them and finding out what happens to the main characters.
Stars of the week
Nursery
William is our star of the week because as soon as he arrives at Nursery, he gets busy with his activities; he is friends with everyone and is just a super member of our Nursery class.
Sophia is a star as she puts so much effort into everything that she does.
Reception
This week, Mrs Roberts wanted to make the parents and carers of the children in Reception the stars not only for this week, but for over the term, for their fabulous support and help with remote learning.
Year 1
Max is my star of the week for his enthusiastic and determined attitude during some quite challenging mathematics this week.
Year 2
Sophie is the star of the week because of the enthusiasm she has shown to our history topic. Sophie has shown such pride with her learning and has produced some wonderful pieces of writing. Well done Sophie!
Year 3
Isaac has been an absolute star all of this half term. He joins in every session enthusiastically and always challenges himself with his work. Well done Isaac.
Lexi has been chosen to be a star because not only does she work really hard in school but on her days at home she puts in excellent effort too, producing amazing work. Well done Lexi.
Year 4
Oliver has produced some amazing work and has been consistently ‘upping his game’ every week. He pushes himself in every task and does this with an brilliant smile on his face. We are so proud of how Oliver has persevered and of the determination and enthusiasm he has shown towards all his home learning. Well done, Oliver!
Year 5
Jack has consistently put in a huge effort in his remote learning. He completes all the tasks to a high standard and makes sure he asks questions if he doesn't understand. In tutor groups, he always offers suggestions and answers questions. Although he hasn't always found learning at home or the tasks easy, Jack has had a brilliant half term, well done!
Year 6
Lily for her 'can do' attitude to her learning. Lily gets straight to all of her learning tasks independently. She even manages to complete extra tasks that are given. Well done Lily, a fantastic attitude to learning!
Luke for his perseverance with his learning this week. Not only has Luke tried really hard in his English and writing work, he has made sure that he is challenging himself by doing extra maths work! Well done Luke!
A huge well done to all our Cathedral Stars.

Year 6 Taskmaster Challenge
This week children were given their second Task Master challenge. They were asked to design a character using only fruit and vegetables! The design brief was:
• It may be real vegetables
• It may be a drawn design
• It must be a new characterThe children rose to the challenge and wow, we have had some absolutely fantastic creations!
Exploring feelings in Year 3
If peacefulness was a shape, it would be the shape of raindrops.
If peacefulness was a colour it would be a rainbow.
If peacefulness was a texture it would be like feathers.
A peaceful sound would be the sound of a gentle sea.
This what I think peacefulness looks like. Emery
Love
I would feel love in my heart.
If it was a shape it would be a heart.
If it was a colour it would be pink.
The texture would be soft and squishy.
Love would make a gentle sound and it would be quietly lovely. Ava
Worship in Lockdown
You can access weekly worship resources from our website 'Worship in Lockdown' page including one produced by Darcy Allen who is our new family and schools worker at Ripon Cathedral. You can access the worship by clicking on the link below.
Darcy Allen worship on Justice
This week at our Zoom Worship we were entertained by the children in the Early Years who had made a fabulous film telling the story of the Rainbow Fish and how it learnt to treat others fairly and be a good friend! Well done Early Years!
Health and Well-Being Resources
If you visit the Health and Well-Being page on our school website, you will find some useful information and links, including access to a free e-book 'How to Stay Calm in a Global Pandemic'. This is an excellent, short, easy to read book with helpful ideas to keep us all feeling better. Please take a look!
In addition, Youth Mental Health Ambassador, Dr Alex George has shared his ‘top five tips’ for young people’s good mental health and wellbeing. This is live on the Department for Education’s YouTube channel.
