Grade 1
In first grade we have been implementing many of the components of the Lesley Literacy Collaborative model. These include interactive read alouds, interactive writing, book making and word study. Your children can tell you about the books we read and the conversations we have! We are all very excited about our author visit with Brian Lies on November 12th.
Grade 2
In both Science and ELA, Second graders are learning how animals adapt to their ever changing habitats. Our mentor text, “Where Do Polar Bears Live?” challenges our students to use their informational text reading skills and their super science knowledge to understand how animals have to adapt to their environment. At the end of the Unit, students will prepare a poster highlighting their knowledge about the polar bear and its Arctic habitat. We enjoyed meeting with our families and discussing our favorite topic: YOUR awesome students!
Grade 3
Third graders are learning about force and motion in science. In Miss Nickerson’s class, students built catapults to discuss force, velocity, and distance. They used math and measurement skills to record their results. Mrs. Cornell’s students have been practicing their scientific observation skills while recording their data in their science notebooks.
Grade 4
Our fourth graders were very disappointed that author Susan E. Goodman’s visit was cancelled. We have rescheduled for later in the year. In writing we will begin non-fiction writing using the key word strategy. In math we are using strategies and properties to multiply by two digit numbers. In honor of Veteran’s Day, we have enjoyed reading America’s White Table by Margot Raven.
Grade 5
It is a little “spacey” in the 5th grade hallway as the 5th graders continue to learn more about the vastness of our universe and the laws of gravity that hold the planets in orbit. We thought about how the Earth’s position in relation to the Sun affects climate and time and noticed how the moon appears to change and why that happens. Students are continuing to read on a daily basis and learn how to pay attention to their thinking and apply literary concepts to their self-selected books. Grade 5 students at MKG are also using Discovery Ed for science education. It supports teaching with videos, reading, exploration, and review. They are beginning to identify themselves as writers as they craft narrative and informational pieces that include precise language and are written according to a specific purpose. Having learned the traditional multiplication algorithm, we will be using this knowledge as we multiply decimals. Concepts of exploration, trade, and colonization are being introduced in Social Studies to round out our very busy, full days in 5th grade. Classes are also eagerly working in our outside garden in cooperation with Soule Farm. They're next visit discussing soil and composting is November 14th.
