Gas Laws

Boyle's Law describes how the pressure of a gas decrease as the volume increases.

Charles's Law describes how gases tend to expand when they are heated up.

Dalton's Law states that in a mixture of gases, the total pressure exerted is equal to the sum of all the individual pressures.

Gay-Lussac's Law states that as the temperature of a gas increases so will the pressure

Henry's Law states that the amount of gas that dissolves into a liquid will be equal to the amount of pressure that gas has.


The bends, also known as decompression sickness (DCS) or Caisson disease happens when scuba divers are exposed to dissolved gasses such as nitrogen that come up in bubbles during changes of pressure occur. It can also effect aviators and astronauts. This condition can cause death, joint pain, rashes, fatigue and can be treated by a hyperbaric chamber for re-compression. The gas laws that are involved are boyle's law and Henry's law because they both talk about the change in pressure and the amount of gas.

air embolisms happens when a scuba diver surfaces to quickly allowing to escape into the blood vessels from the lungs, this can cause confusion, breathing difficulty, and chest pains and can cause heart attacks and strokes. This can be treated by hospital care, oxygen, removing air from the heart, and a high-pressure chamber. Boyle's law because air embolisms can result from unequal pressures which talks about gas expanding relating to Boyle's law.

Oxygen toxicity occurs when you breath in too much molecular oxygen. Some symptoms include severe cough, chest tightness, difficult breathing, shortness of breath. Long term symptoms include death and there is no treatment. Boyle's Law and Dalton's Law because gas varies with surrounding pressure making it toxic.
