PARENTS! To give your child the best educational experience possible, we’re excited to raise funds for a new series of text books. We’re hosting an exciting Glow Run to make that happen! Family and friends anywhere in the world can support our school by giving pledges toward the number of laps your student will run on the day of the Glow Run, taking place on February 10th.
Our 2-week Glow Run program kicks off on February 1st, so you will begin to hear your child talking about what they’re learning during the program leading up to the run. Students will learn how to make a difference in their world through an unbelievable character theme, Backyard Box Office.
HELP TAYLOR MILL IN 4 STEPS!
1. Register on FUNRUN.COM on February 1st.
2. Connect to sponsors—friends and family who can donate to help our school.
3. Cheer on your child! (Come to the Glow Run on February 10th)
4. Collect! Pledge money will be due one week after the run. Checks are payable to the PTA.
Be on the lookout for the Pledgebook and other fliers with more details.
THANKS IN ADVANCE, PARENTS!

Future Ready District Assessment for Parents
As part of our district’s Future Ready Action Plan development, we are working to gain valuable feedback from various groups. Your feedback will help us make districtwide planning decisions moving forward.
We are currently looking for your feedback in the area of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. We ask that you take 30 minutes to share you insight by completing the survey link below by January 31. Your feedback will be curated with the feedback from all other members of the group and consolidated into a report that provides our district with readiness levels, a gap analysis, and strategies to support our district team moving forward.
To complete the assessment, please click on the link below:
http://dashboard.futurereadyschools.org/survey/curriculum/8114/
Please complete the brief survey by January 31 so that we can compile the feedback shortly thereafter. Your feedback will be combined with that from others in the group to create a comprehensive report. No feedback is tied back to an individual user.
Your honest feedback is a key to our future planning and implementation. Thank you for your time and for supporting the students of our district as part of our planning process moving forward.
If you have any questions, please contact Ed Bonhaus at ed.bonhaus@kenton.kyschools.us.
Sincerely,

The Monthly Mill - January 2017
Student Voice Survey
On February 14-17, 3rd-5th grade students in our building will be asked to complete the student voice survey. This anonymous survey will take roughly 10-20 minutes and is intended to provide your child with an opportunity to give input on his/her classroom experience. The survey results will be used by teachers to reflect upon as well as guide their professional practices. This survey is taken in the student portal in Infinite Campus and students will have their passwords reset to accommodate this. Password instructions will be given to students when it is their time to take the survey. The parent portal will not be affected in any way. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact me at 859-356-2566 or at melody.stacy@kenton.kyschools.us. If you wish for your student not to participate in this survey, please complete the waiver form that is attached in the link below.
PARENT WAIVERHealth Tips from our Nurse
Dealing with painful chapped lips this winter?
You cover your hands and feet when the temperature drops; do the same for your lips. Apply lip balm, and wear a scarf or a ski mask that covers your mouth when you go out in the cold. Don’t lick your lips. While it might seem like a good idea at the time, running your tongue over your lips is the worst thing you can do for them. You do not have oil glands in your lips to protect them so as your saliva dries, it takes more moisture from your skin causing lips and the skin are your lips to become red, cracked and inflamed. Reach for your lip balm instead.
Stopping the Spread of Lice
While the thought of head lice can be scary, they're usually less all-out threatening than we make them out to be. A few simple things will help you prevent lice.
Know the symptoms. As you might know, lice are little and can be white, brown, or dark gray. They're most common around the ears and the back of the neck, and feed off of human blood. They are much more noticeable on darker-colored hair.
· The most common symptom of head lice is itchiness in and around the back of the neck.
· In many children, lice don't produce any symptoms until weeks or months after they've moved in. For this reason, it's important to do regular visual check-ups with a fine-toothed comb.
· Doctors recommend combing for lice after the child has taken a bath/shower, while their hair is still wet.
· Lice don’t fly; they crawl, so make it difficult for the little guys to crawl onto your child’s heads! Tie long hair up as often as possible – buns are great, but even braids and ponytails will help minimize the surface area that long, flowy hair will touch in a given day.
Teach your kids the importance of not sharing certain items, such as the following:
· Hats
· Headbands
· Hair accessories
· Pillows
· Combs
· Any other objects that promote direct head-to-head contact between a carrier and potential carrier.
The Importance of Good Attendance
This continues to be a friendly reminder. All families only want what is best for their children. When planning trips, please remember even one missed day at school impacts your child’s academic progress. Please continue be aware of the school calendar when planning vacations around holidays and only keep your child home from school when it is absolutely necessary. Making up missed assignments after an absence cannot replace the high quality classroom instruction your child receives everyday as a student in the Kenton County School District. Every day counts when it comes to your child. Please continue to support your child’s education by only allowing your child to miss school if it is absolutely necessary.
