March is Nutrition Month!
Spaghetti squash, jicama, hummus, YUM, YUM! Students at MES have the opportunity to taste a different vegetable every Tuesday in March to celebrate Nutrition Month!
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) believes that the best learning takes place in healthy environments that emphasize physical, mental, and social wellness. They have been promoting healthy eating through our Vegetable Tasting Tuesday Program for the past ten years!
One Tuesday a month, except for March, students are given clues over the announcements about a vegetable, then in the cafeteria our wonderful PTO volunteers pass out the veggie and a sticker that says, “I tried (name of veggie) today!” So far this year the students have tried: sweet peppers, carrot muffins, roasted butternut squash, daikon radishes, dried green peas, and this past month, spaghetti squash. The kids love the program and a little peer pressure to try the vegetable never hurts.
A new initiative this year is SHAC Jr! Mrs. Naegeli and Mrs. Bernicke are working with a group of fourth grade students to help promote healthy living. They have created a great bulletin board, made posters, helped with the videos for WKID and plan to have a food drive as well!
Thank you SHAC Jr. members; Maia Currin, Henry Scott, Kaia Wallace, Beckham Vanderstelt, Max Mohamed, Cailyn Fong, Elijah Wolterman, Lyla Hoffmann, Sydney Haizlip, Tala Darnaser, Bridget Creedon and Conner Geers!
