Reader's Workshop: Extreme Weather Research
Hello 4N parents we are going to teach you about our extreme weather research. So, all of our class split up into groups of different extreme weather topics such as tornadoes and floods. First we researched our topics by reading books: real books and books on Epic!.b Each group got different natural disasters. You could decide which natural disaster you wanted to do. You would get a group of 2 or 3 people based on what you chose. You could choose tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, droughts or hurricanes but groups only chose tornados, earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis. We all researched our topics, then we made posters to teach the rest of the class of what we learned about. The posters were split into different parts. Prevention and safety, First hand experiences, Famous _____ in history (whatever your natural disaster was), and how it’s measured. Each group got a chance to share with the class. Now we are starting to research a second topic, but in groups of 3-5 this time. We are going to research and make posters make posters again Thanks for listening!
Writer's Workshop: Opinion Essays
Dear 4N families this month we made and learned about making persuasive essays. Before we made our essays Ms. Nguyen told us to choose earther to write about that we want online school on snow days or that we don't want online school on snow days. So first we made our essays. We thought about what side we are on and what reasons give evidence. Then we typed or wrote our essays. We had to have all of the parts of an essay. Like a introduction and conclusion and everything in between. Before we had our debate we looked at our essays to make sure we had everything wwe needed. If not then we went back and fixed what needed to be fixed. We needed our essays to be very good so we could convince a lot of people. Then, we had a debate about having online school on snow days. We explained our thoughts and shared our reasons. The majority of the class was on the “No!” side, but some people, like us believed we should have online school on snow days. Some of the reasons we should not have online school on snow days are that it would be too much screen time, it’s our day to relax (and play in the snow, of course), and that we can always have makeup days later. Some of the reasons we should have school on snow days were that there would be no makeup days, it gives us something to do, and if we are bored we might play too much video games or watch too much TV. There are many different reasons for each side.
So, what do you think? Do you think that we should have online school on snow days, like us? Or do you think that we should not, like many others? Thank you for reading our 4News smore. See you next month!

Social Studies: Immigration Museum
Hello parents! Welcome to 4News. It is Ben, Eli, and Harrison here reporting for all the parents of 4N students. We are here to talk about the immigration project. All the 4th graders have to make a story or a Minecraft world about their journey to America. For the story, it can be like a diary or a journal. We have to write ten entries. For the Minecraft world, we had to build our home country, the ship, and America.
So now we are talking about the immigration museum. We had set up things that we brought from our home country. Like me, Eli or should I say Jacob, my immigrant’s name. I was from poland. We had to bring 5 or less things. My five things were a Buddha statue, a container, a special recipe great, great, great, grandma made. Another thing that I had was a blanket
We also had the international food festival. At the food festival almost all the kids came and brought food from their country that they “immigrated” from. I brought Pierogies. Harrison brought brisket. Eli brought kielbasa.
We had an awesome time with the immigration project! Well, see you next month on 4News! Bye!!!
Social Studies: Map Skills
In this smore we are going to talk about social studies. In social studies we have been learning about map skills. That's when we try to find the exact location on the map. We had a packet and we had questions to answer so let's say the packet had a question and it said what state is 35 degrees north the answer would be Tennessee because if you look north it is 80 degrees so you start at 35 degrees and do that with 80 degrees and in the middle you get Tennessee. Then at the end we had to put all of the states on the map in the packet. We can find all of these states with just trying to find out with degrees and if it goes north or east or south or west. That's what we learned in social studies.

Mock Trial Preparations
This month we did a lot of fun stuff. One of my favorites was auditioning for the mock trial parts. We each wrote a passage on why we should get each part. I (Sophia) wanted to do the prosecution side as a witness or prosecutor or juror. Sasha wanted to be a juror or bailiff. Keep reading to find out more! Hi it is Sophia Let me tell you about the protection side. A prosecutor is an attorney or lawyer against the person who is being accused of the crime. They give evidence on why they should go to jail or pay a fine. This trial is about because of Winn Dixie. Otis is the one being accused of the crime. He is being accused of disturbing the peace and not listening to a police officer. I think he should be arrested for that because you're not supposed to disobey a police officer. Hello, Sasha here! I am going to talk about the defensive side in court. Defensive lawyers/attorneys are supposed to protect the person in court. Defensive lawyers or attorneys also try to convince the jurors and the judge that the person in court is innocent. They might do that by providing evidence. One way of finding evidence is by interviewing witnesses. Witnesses are people who were there when the crime took place. The defensive lawyers/attorneys will interview the witnesses for more evidence that the person in court is indeed innocent. Another member of the court is jurors. Jurors, also known as the jury, decide if the person in court is innocent or guilty. They listen to both sides and at the end of the trial, they go into a separate room and talk about the idea that was being presented to them. Then, they decide if the person is innocent or guilty. Pretty cool, right? Preparing our mock trial is really fun, and we all wish you could experience it too. Thanks for reading!
