Terra Linda Tiger Tale
July 28, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
I hope you are doing well. I've been thinking about you all a lot as we prepare for the start of school and the many questions you probably have. I wanted to make sure you saw today's announcement from our District. It should be in your email.
Below, I have provided you with more information about the differences between Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) and FLEX Online. One is in the form of a graphic, and one is in list form. It’s important to note that in both our school’s Comprehensive Distance Learning model and in FLEX Online School, attendance will be taken and grades will be reported for each student.
Do you have more questions?
Join me for a one-hour Principal Chat via Zoom on Thursday this week at either 3:00 pm or 7:00 pm. I added the evening session as a second option depending on your schedule. Here is the Zoom info for both Principal Chats:
- Zoom Link
- Zoom Meeting ID: 959 7926 2449
- Zoom Passcode: Tigers
If you would prefer a conversation with me in a language other than English, please email me in your home language at christina_batsell@beaverton.k12.or.us
I will work with our Multilingual Department to set up an interpreted phone or Zoom conversation as soon as possible.
You are also welcome to send me individual questions via email.
Our final Summer Reading Challenge is next Monday! We will be looking at how books can be both mirrors and windows for students, something we will be focusing on more this coming school year. It is so important that we highlight these opportunities for students so that all of our students, especially our students of color, see themselves in the books they are reading and in what they are learning (mirrors). In addition, all of our students need to better understand the experiences of those different from them (windows). If you would like a range of resources to use at home this summer, check out the "Summer Parent Newsletter" - also linked below. One of the embedded links you'll find is https://socialjusticebooks.org/, a selection of multicultural and social justice books for children.
I look forward to seeing you Thursday on Zoom!

Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) at Terra Linda
Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) is a plan for more robust online instruction for our students than we were able to accomplish last spring. This will include:
Daily live and recorded instruction in core content that addresses grade level learning targets and includes whole group, small group, and individual teaching and learning structures
Instruction from Terra Linda teachers that is responsive to students’ academic, social, and emotional needs and goals
Teachers and specialists constructing and delivering lessons via Zoom and in Seesaw or Canvas. We will be working to streamline and improve our communication.
Students may choose to participate exclusively in CDL online and not participate in the hybrid model for the entire school year (2020-2021).
When it is safe to begin the hybrid model, 3 days per week will be CDL and 2 days will be onsite in-person supplemental instruction.
Teachers will be using our current curriculum adoptions and assessments. The learning opportunities will be more robust and comprehensive.
All instruction will be provided by our Teachers, Specialists and Para Educators.
The hybrid model is a combination of CDL and in-person on-site supplemental instruction.
Students will need parent/adult support in any learning environment.
Participation is expected and students are required to attend as an enrolled student.
There is no additional sign up or registration required to participate in CDL or hybrid.
Students will develop relationships with teachers while participating in CDL and continue those relationships when we are able to begin the hybrid model or if they choose to remain in CDL
We will continue to have assemblies and social emotional learning opportunities.
There will be a more set schedule than in the spring.
FLEX Online School
FLEX Online School is a Beaverton K-12 online Option School.
The K-5 curriculum is from Florida Virtual and will include district adopted and teacher curated materials when appropriate.
If you choose FLEX Online School, you are unenrolling from current elementary school and will no longer be connected to your neighborhood school teachers and staff.
FLEX Online School is an option for those who would have chosen an online school prior to COVID.
FLEX Online School is asking families to commit at least through the end of the first semester (mid January 2021). If you are planning on returning to your neighborhood school when conditions allow, it is better to choose CDL and stay with your school.
To be successful in FLEX, support from a learning coach (parent/guardian/relative) is key.
Families should expect to spend 4-6 hours dedicated to school each day. This includes both online and offline activities.
FLEX Online School will not support Dual Immersion, SUMMA, Rachel Carson, IB or other MS & HS Options (ISB, ACMA, etc.) programs

Summer Reading Challenge
During the session, we shared this Padlet with a range of resources about friendship: https://padlet.com/amy_chamberlain1/ojydnp1zgjh7d7l3
This week, students are invited to find an interesting part of a book and show how they made a question from a statement, included more characters or considered the opposite. They can also do some character work and share how a character is a good friend and/or shows empathy to others. They can post their ideas on the Padlet.
Next week we will be exploring books as windows and mirrors. We hope students join!
