Thought for the Week
Encouraging and engaging discussion, debate and discourse.
Remembrance Day
Our History teacher Mrs Cranston raised the interesting question during assemblies this week about the real meaning of poppy wearing. By her own admittance she was cross and concerned initially by the growing scepticism around wearing poppies in remembrance of 'fallen' soldiers. However, once she began to delve deeper into the issue she found herself becoming more concerned by the changing nature of the symbol.
'Fallen' soldiers.
The dreadful images of soldiers striving to survive surrounded by horrendous conditions and devastating military bombardment during WWI.
Comrades who really remember.
Soldiers who served in active duty remember the lives of those who were killed in action.
The Saturdays.
Pop group The Saturdays have been among the faces promoting the appeal this year. This image of them frolicking cheerfully a midst the poppies seems juxtaposed to the horrifying images of war and the original point of the movement.
Have we lost the true meaning of Remembrance Day?
Maybe we have been losing it for a long time. Maybe it always meant different things to different people. The debate has been discussed on radio shows and in the news considerably over the past week. What do you think about the way poppy wearing has been portrayed recently?
