Cougar Community Connection
A weekly newsletter from your principal, Shannon McPherson
We had a fun Halloween celebration with everyone. Those who came to check out the Halloween parade I am sure left with a smile on your face. The kids had a great time showing off their costumes and it was great fun to start the day with our community all snuggled up together in our school watching the parade. Our third graders had an "in school" field trip this week connected to their science standards. Mad Science came in and did some cool experiments and got the kids really engaged in learning about science.
This is a really important weekend to please remember to get your vote in and ballots dropped off to any of the ballot drop locations in Douglas County. I dropped mine at the Highlands Ranch Police sub station on Highlands Ranch Parkway near the Town Center. This election is really important to our school and our school district, but having your voice heard is the most important. Please, please, please vote and remember that it has to be dropped off to a ballot box on or before November 7th to count. We thank you in advance for getting your ballots turned in SOON!!!!

Our school is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 60 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. Click on the link below and enter the online order code shown on your child's order form or to search for your child's artwork. Then, have fun shopping!

Open Enrollment Deadlines (Out of our Attendance Area Families)
Hello Cougar Run family,
This message is for our out of CRUN attendance area families only:
Application for Open Enrollment for the 24-25 school year is opening up soon. IF you have a NEW student who you would like to attend Cougar Run for the upcoming 24-25 school year AND your address is out of the Cougar Run boundaries, then you will need to apply for Open Enrollment for your NEW student.
Once a student is accepted for Open Enrollment they are accepted at our school through 6th grade - you do not need to apply each school year. This means that your current Cougar Run Elementary open-enrolled student is good through 6th grade But if you have, for example, a kindergarten student for the 24-25 school year, you will need to apply for open enrollment for your kindergarten student.
You can check your address here to see which Elementary School is associated with your address.
If you want to apply for Open Enrollment for your NEW student for the 24-25 school year you can go to this link starting November 1st. The Open Enrollment application window opens November 1st and closes December 1st at 4pm.
Feel free to contact our registrar, Charlene (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Choice Programming (303-387-9506) if you have any Open Enrollment questions.

Advanced/Gifted Programming Information
DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th or 6th grade--a student's final year of elementary school (November).
6th Grade Universal Screen
As part of this process, ALL students in Cougar Run not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on November 7 & 8. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.
If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.
Gifted Identification Referral Testing
If your child is in grades 3, 4, 5, and you believe they need evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.
Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked HERE
Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.
