The STEM Scoop
April 16, 2021
Hello JKSA Families!
Welcome to the final six weeks of the school year! This six weeks always flies by because it is so busy. We will have STAAR assessments beginning May 4th and ending May 14th. We are working on some version of field day for the last week of school and we have spring pictures Tuesday, April 20th. Please help us remind learners not to wait to get work turned in, there will not be many opportunities for late work this six weeks. In addition to all of this, we have an opportunity for parents to volunteer to help put together our outdoor learning lab - please look for the sign-up genius below.
We are here if you need us.

Designer Appreciation - Words of Affirmation
It's Almost Time for STAAR
- Phones and Smart Watches should be turned off and left at home, or turned in to the designer in the testing room, or put in the learner's backpack. Backpacks are kept outside of the testing room and once testing begins learners are not allowed to retrieve items from their backpacks.
- Learners should bring laptops for afternoon classes (after STAAR testing is complete).
- Learners should take snacks, water bottles, and books to read into the testing room with them.
- We will be eating lunch later than normal; so that learners do not have to have silent lunch. By waiting until testing is over, lunch can truly be a time to decompress and socialize. Because of this, we will allow learners to bring a small snack such as goldfish, crackers, etc. Do not send a messy snack (Cheetos, chocolate, oranges, anything sticky) since this can cause issues with answer documents.
- Please make sure your learner goes to bed the night before in enough time to get a full night's rest and that they eat a healthy breakfast.
- Make sure learners wake up on time and arrive to school prior to the test start time (approximately (9:10-9:15 am).
- Keep in mind we cannot deliver messages to learners during the STAAR test, but once testing is complete and materials are secured we can communicate any messages.
- Our first STAAR test this year will occur Tuesday April 6th. On April 6th all seventh graders will take the Writing STAAR in person at Jerry Knight STEM Academy. Sixth graders will attend their normal mode of instruction (in person will come to JKSA and virtual will learn from home). All 8th graders will learn from home asynchronously. This will allow us to have additional certified staff members facilitate testing to ensure small testing group sizes and other COVID protocol.
- Visit the Jerry Knight STEM Academy Spring 2021 Assessment Calendar for a complete list of STAAR and EOC assessments.
Please consider donating
Mrs. Riall's Engineering Arts class is in need of newspapers for a project.
7th and 8th grade families - please consider donating your learners' used copies of their 6th grade novels. The novels we are looking for are:
A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park
Refugee by Alan Gratz

Transitioning from "Pre-AP" to "Advanced"
Due to changes by College Board, MISD will be changing the title of courses titled “Pre-AP” to “Advanced” beginning in the 2021-22 school year. This change will ONLY be in title, as curriculum and services will remain the same. For more information on this, CLICK HERE for a statement from MISD.
Please keep in mind that "advanced" is not the same as accelerated and at JKSA both our math and science is accelerated so that learners are able to take Algebra I and Biology I as 8th graders.
NJHS Website
NJHS is an honor society based on 5 pillars - scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Not only do NJHS members have to be academically strong, but they have to be committed to serving our community. Right now several members have planned different events to earn service hours. Please visit the NJHS Calendar of Events to see what has been planned, what you and your learner can participate in, and how you may be able to support these learners as they embark on service projects.
A special shout out to Ms. Dangerfield for working so hard as the NJHS sponsor during a time where what we normally do just doesn't quite work. Thank you for thinking outside the box in how NJHS can still honor the values of the 5 pillars it is based upon.
