How are the topics and problems in Of Mice and Men similar to or different from the topics and problems we have today?

  • George and Lennie are working on a farm doing chores, that is similar to now because illegal immigrants do that today and take jobs that don't give money or just little money


How does the problem or idea relate to the modern day?

  • We have people that are coming into the US and taking peoples jobs that citizens can have


How has this problem changed over time?

  • Some of the immigrants are coming illegally and people don’t like it


How do we fix or solve the the problem presented?

  • We could ask them for passports so we would know who is coming illegally and legally

  • Why are people immigrating to the United states?

  • They want to live a better life, have good jobs and get away from the problems in their own country



  • How are people immigrating to places?

They are coming by boat, land



  • What is the problem- Immigrants are coming illegally and there are language barriers.


Solutions to the Problem/Issue: We could put more strict laws on border crossing, I think if they can’t speak english they shouldn’t be able to come to America. I also think that they should become a naturalized citizen if they are going to take American jobs.

Connection to BIG THEME/IDEA: In the article the people trying to cross the border are not giving up and they are trying there hardest to cross a border no matter how big it is, this relates to our theme because Lennie and George are doing anything to make money so they will risk their lives to get money and do whatever it takes.

Timeline of Events

Event 1 (MLA): Steinbeck writes, “George unslung his bindle and dropped it gently on the bank. “I aint sure it’s good water.” he said. “Looks kinda scummy”(3).

Relation to idea/issue: This relates to immigration because George and Lennie are willing to use dirty water from a bank because they have nowhere else to get water while they are immigrating


Event 2 (MLA): Steinbeck writes, “come bring your bindle over here by the fire it will be nice sleepin here. Looking up , and the leaves , don’t build up no more fire we’ll let her die down they built their beds on the sand ,as the blaze dropped from the fire the sphere of light grew smaller ; the curling branches disappeared and only a faint glimmer showed where the tree trunks where''(16).

Relation to idea/issue:they had to sleep outside because lennie and george are moving away and have no place to stay the night.


Event 3 (MLA): steinbeck writes, “Event 3 (MLA): steinbeck writes, “ O.K. said George .An you ain’t gonna do no bad things like you done in weed, neither. Lennie looked puzzled like i done in weed, oh so you forgot that too,did ya? Well i ain’t gonna remind ya, fear ya do it again . A light of understanding broke on Lennie’s face . They run us out of weed he exploded triumphantly .

Relation to idea/issue: They got chased out of weed because of what happened with Lennie and they are going to a different area to get a new job .



Event 4 (MLA): Steinbeck writes, “Sure we are, if you gather up some dead willow sticks. I got three cans of beans in my bindle. You get a fire ready. I’ll give you a match when you get the sticks together. Then we’ll heat the beans and have supper”(8).

Relation to idea/issue: George and Lennie aren’t able to get that much food and a good meal so they have to be able to cook with a fire and some cans of beans to eat


Event 5 (MLA): Steinbeck writes, “ So we sat in a irrigation ditch under water all the rest of that day. Got on’ you’r heads sticking out from the side of the ditch. An’ we scrammed outta there.” ( 51)

Relation to idea/issue: Lennie got in serious trouble so they went to go hide and they moved

Connection to BIG IDEA/ISSUE: This piece of evidence proves Lennie is a forgetful person and because of this he is a bit slow compared to a man his age.
