Greetings Lowell School,
T-shirts yesterday and snow gear today! New England weather never gets boring.
Last week was a busy week at Lowell. We hosted in-house field trips and moved our furniture and boxes to Lowell West. Our move to Lowell West is essentially complete except for the materials the students will need this week. Students and teachers will have access to their devices and technology until Thursday at day's end. This week the movers will move our contents to the Phillips Building.
Our teachers have done a fantastic job of keeping teaching and learning going through all the crazy disruptions. The kids appear to be doing well. Teachers and students are taking the time to discuss the move and the changes coming in the next few weeks. Students are looking to the adults in the world for reassurance. They want to know everything will be okay.
You may want to take the time to visit your child's new location before the first day of school. Some students benefit from previewing their new environment before the actual first day. You can find the dates and times when the buildings will be open below.
Friday, February 18th there is no school for students. This is a professional development day for our staff. Teachers and staff will be using this day to set up classrooms. The FTO is graciously providing coffee and breakfast treats in the morning for our teachers at each location. At 12:30, the Parent Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Council have secured a donation of ice cream from Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream. What a great pick me up for the afternoon. We cannot thank you enough for all your generosity and support during this time.
Wednesday, Mr. Chen and I will be holding a whole school zoom meeting to review bus procedures and expectations. We will outline what it means to be a good citizen on the bus.
Friday was the deadline to get in a permission slip to walk home from the bus stop. Permission slips only apply to grades 3-5 or families who have their oldest child in grades 3-5 and ride the bus with their younger sibling. Special bus passes will be given to children who have permission to walk home after being dropped off at their stop. An adult must pick up younger students unless their family has permitted their older sibling to escort them home.
Here's a message to those families allowing their children to walk home from the bus. I strongly suggest walking the route once or twice before the first day. I know most stops are pretty close to your house; however, it's best to practice their way and review safety precautions with them ahead of time. It creates muscle memory they can rely on when they need to do it alone. It's always a good time to review stranger danger rules and rules about looking both ways before you cross a street.
I hope you all have a wonderful February vacation. We'll be around next week setting up and getting ready for our new adventure. If you need to reach us, email may be the best method.

Writing Across Our Third Grade
Throughout this school year, teachers in grades 3-5 have been working with TLA (Teachers Learning Alliance) focused on improving student writing with special attention on celebrating their accomplishments and displaying pieces. Our literacy coach Joia Kirby has a passion for writing and leading this work. She loves working with teachers and looks for fun ways to make writing exciting for students. Great job, third grade!

Parents' Recreational Softball League
A group of parents is trying to put together a recreational softball league for parents of kids in the Watertown schools. The idea is for it to be super relaxed and open to people of all skill levels. Teams would be school-based to give parents a fun opportunity to socialize and build community with other parents at their kid’s school.
