Back-To-School Night

We are excited to host Back-To-School Night on Thursday, August 17th between 5:30pm and 7pm.

Once you have your child's class placement, you will be able to sign up for Back to School Night. The class placement email will go out to families after 3:30pm on Monday, August 14th.

We are using Signup Genius in order to stagger arrival in hopes of easing parking problems as well as making it possible for your child's teacher to have a greater opportunity to greet and visit with fewer families at one time.

Once you receive your child's class placement (on Aug. 14th), use the link below to let us know when you would like to come to Back to School Night.

A Message From Mrs. Renton

I want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to school. As I get older it sure seems like time goes by faster and faster. I can't believe summer is almost over and we are preparing for new school year.

If you are new to our school community, I'd like to introduce myself. I am starting my seventh year as the principal at Hawthorn and my thirty-second year as an educator in the Park Hill school district. Before coming to Hawthorn I spent 17 years as a teacher at Union Chapel and 8 years as an assistant principal at both Line Creek and Southeast. The Hawthorn community is special and I am so happy that I am here.

I will send a weekly email and newsletter to all Hawthorn families in an effort to keep you up-to-date on building-wide events and news. Your child's classroom teacher will also send a weekly communication that is specific to that classroom/grade level. This first newsletter includes a lot of information that is necessary for a new family. You may want to keep this handy so that you can refer to it throughout the year when you have questions about birthday treats, medications at school, arrival/dismissal routines, etc.

Our staff is already hard at work preparing for another amazing year at Hawthorn. We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Brooke Renton, Hawthorn Principal

Image/ Contact Information Opt-Out Designation

Throughout the school year, the district or school might take pictures/videos and release personal information about students. This could be to a local newspaper, Hawthorn newsletters or on our school website. The district or school might also post pictures on social media (Facebook or Twitter). Additionally, Hawthorn PTA publishes a school directory so parents can contact each other. The school provides contact information for this directory, including but not limited to names, address and telephone numbers. If you DO NOT want your child's image, or your family's contact information released, please contact your child's teacher of the front office to fill out an Image/Contact Information OPT-OUT form.

Daily Arrival Procedures--New School Start Time!

Supervision of students begins at 8:50 am. Car riders should be dropped off at the front of the building. Please do not drop off students before 8:50 am, as we don't have adult supervision until that time. As students arrive, they should enter the front doors and head to their pod area. If students are eating breakfast they may report to the cafeteria at 8:50 am for breakfast. Students arriving after 9:10 am, will be counted tardy and need to report to the office to sign in with a parent.

Daily Dismissal Procedures

Your child's teacher will reach out to confirm your child's daily dismissal plan. Please communicate any changes to this plan, as they arise, throughout the school year to ensure that your child gets home safely each day.

BUS RIDERS: Bus riders are dismissed through the north doors (by the gym) each afternoon. Classroom teachers walk students to the buses and help them find the appropriate bus. During the first few days, this process can take a bit longer than normal as staff members double check that all students are on the correct bus. Then, the bus can get further delayed as the drivers take time to make sure students safely get off at the right stop.

If your child is a bus rider you will be able to access bus information in your parent portal on the morning of Monday, August 14th.

ADVENTURE CLUB: Students who participate in the after-school care program, Adventure Club, will be dismissed directly to their assigned classroom each day. Adventure Club staff checks in each student and cross-checks with our front office to ensure that all students who are enrolled in Adventure Club are accounted for at dismissal.

CAR RIDERS: We will provide each student with TWO 2023-24 Car Rider signs. Having this Hawthorn Car Rider sign on display in your vehicle allows parents or family members to remain in the car in the car rider lane during evening dismissal instead of entering the building with your photo ID and signing out the student. We will have TWO car rider lanes this year to accommodate the large number of car riders we have. Please see the detailed car rider plan below.

While the car rider line will be slow the first few days, once students and families learn the routine, it will speed up considerably. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding that our main focus is on all students getting into cars safely. Parents can help by staying in your vehicle and allowing staff members to assist students into cars and teaching your child how to buckle their own seat belt.

WALKERS: Walkers will be dismissed through the K/1 Pod doors and can meet their families near the baseball field south of the playground. Students who don't have a parent/guardian meeting them at school, will be accompanied to the corner of Chariton and 81st Street by a staff member who will make sure they cross safely.

Safety Drills

All schools in the Park Hill School District follow specific procedures to ensure the safety of students and staff in the event of an emergency. All schools have emergency plans in place. Each year we conduct 10 fire drills (one each month), one earthquake drill, two tornado drills, and two intruder drills. Our staff has been trained on these drills, and we will discuss emergency procedures for all drills in the classrooms during the first days of school. Please know that each teacher will approach their class discussions with care and consideration of all students.

Parent Volunteer Screening Information

We are looking forward to having parent volunteers support our classrooms this year. If you would like to volunteer in your child's classroom or on field trips, you will need to complete the volunteer screening process below.

Volunteer Screening Information:

  • Any volunteer who will be alone with students must have a full screening, which includes a criminal background check, a check of the child abuse and neglect registry, and a check of the sexual offender registry. Volunteers must complete the paperwork (attached below) and return to the Park Hill Communications department or to the Hawthorn office.
  • Visitors who will never be alone with students will not need a full background screening, but they will use our sign-in process, which checks the sexual offender registry.
  • All volunteers must read and agree to the rules in our policy and procedure, and each volunteer will sign in and reaffirm the rules each time they arrive at a school to volunteer.
  • The district will receive updates if a volunteer’s screening status changes. Someone’s volunteer status can change at any time.
  • The district must pay a fee of $42.75 for each background check, as required by the state. If you would like to donate to help defray this expense, please enclose a check made out to the Park Hill School District for this amount with your screening form. This donation is not required.

The screening process can take up to two weeks or longer, depending on the time of year. Please be aware of this when submitting your application in anticipation of volunteering for specific events.

Birthdays At School

Students may bring a birthday treat or favor to school to share with their classmates, as long as they come from our list of treats that contain none of the eight (8) major allergens - milk, wheat, egg, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish.

Thank you for understanding that all classroom treats must come from this list because we do not have the staff capacity to check for allergens that could threaten the health of some students.

Student Medications

A health room is available if your child becomes ill or injured while at school. Hawthorn's health room is staffed by Heather Robbins, a registered nurse. All non-prescription, over-the-counter medication must be sent in the original container with written instructions by the parent or physician. Before any prescription medication can be administered, it must be in a prescription labeled bottle accompanied by a doctor's note, and the Medication Authorization Form must be completed and signed by the parent or guardian. Parents must bring all medication to the health room; please do not send it with a student. All necessary forms can be obtained from the office.

Health Room Contact Information:

Phone: 359-4394

(When emailing information regarding your child's health, it is a good idea to include both the classroom teacher AND Nurse Heather.)

Adventure Club

The Park Hill School District offers before and after school child care at Hawthorn. For more information regarding this program, please call Community Education/ Adventure Club at 359-4064.

Husky Attendance

Attendance is one of the most important factors in academic achievement and we would like your help regarding attendance and punctuality. When students arrive late or leave early consistently, they miss important instructional time. Missouri guidelines require 90% of our students to be in attendance 90% of the time. To help meet this goal, Park Hill has established expectations for attendance and letters will be sent to families if the following attendance percentages are not met.

Level 1: Attendance rate of 90%

Level 2: Attendance rate between 85% and 90%

Level 3: Attendance rate is below 80%

Mrs. Dawson, our School Social Worker, will be working with students and families to make sure we meet the 90/90 goal at Hawthorn. Please help us by making being at school a priority for your family.

If your child does have to absent, please call the school office (359-4390) to report the student's absence. If the school does not receive a call when a student is absent, we will attempt to contact you to check on the student.

Student Badges

All Park Hill students are issued ID badges. These badges, along with a school-issued lanyard will be required to be worn every day. Student ID badges support our safe and caring environment by providing proper identification and improved processes for several aspects of the school day. Students will use the badges to receive lunches in the cafeteria, when boarding our school buses, and for our library check-out process. Your child's badge will be provided by the school and one replacement badge will also be provided (in case of a lost badge). After the first free replacement badge, a $5 fee will be charged for each additional badge. Each student will also be provided with a "Hawthorn Husky" lanyard.
