Can we go back? This is the moment

Tonight is the night, we'll fight 'til it's over
So we put our hands up
Like the ceiling can't hold us
Like the ceiling can't hold us

"Can't Hold Us" is a song written and performed by American hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and singer Ray Dalton. Originally released back in 2011 on the duo's debut studio album The Heist, it ultimately reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Coach A introduced the Cross Country team to Macklemore and his empowering lyrics back in 2011 ... and the Brickie Harriers responded by making their 1st trip to state as a team in nearly 40 years!

This past week was HUGE for Hobart as our football team began their quest to return to Indianapolis & Lucas Oil Stadium on the gridiron and our Harriers battled it out at New Prairie trying to punch a ticket to LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute for the IHSAA STATE FINALS! I don't think the ceiling can hold us!!

Raise those hands ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Cross Country

On Saturday morning, 3 Brickie Harriers competed in the IHSAA SEMI-STATE for Cross Country hosted by New Prairie High School. For the Ladies, it was a pair of talented freshmen making their rookie appearance at Semistate ... Cassie Cohen & Joanna Cantu. On the boys side, sophomore Felix Lopez was making his 2nd CONSECUTIVE appearance. To advance to next week's STATE FINALS at LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, they would need to place among the top 10 individuals not competing for an advancing team.

Girls

On an unusually warm Saturday morning in late October, the Lady Brickies were primed and ready to compete against the very best runners in northern Indiana! With 20 teams and 40 individual qualifiers competing, the field of 180 runners was STACKED, which made for an EXCITING race from start to finish! Cohen, who WON last week's Regional at Lemon Lake, joined Cantu on a mission to make it to Terre Haute! They were as cool as the other side of the pillow and ran like a CHAMPIONS!!

The top 10 individuals who qualified for state were all situated in the top 14 overall finishers ... which is incredible ... and made it very tough to advance. Joanna placed 125th overall in a respectable time of 22:21 and finished her campaign as one of the top 10 Lady Brickie freshman 5k runners ever and earned a spot on the ALL-NCC team! Cassie was 6th after the first mile ... 9th at the two-mile mark ... and was the 12th overall runner into the chute, which means she is STATE BOUND!! Her 12th place finish earned her one more week and a ticket to Terre Haute for the IHSAA STATE FINALS!!! So far this season, Cassie was the St. Joe Invite Champion, Hobart Invite Champion, Lowell Invite Champion, Highland Invite Champion, NCC Champion, Sectional Champion, and Regional Champion!! With her performance on Saturday, she became the 7th Brickie female in the 5k era ... and 9th female individual in school history ... to qualify for the State Finals!! She follows in the footsteps of Brickie legends Celena Guerrero and Christina Shaginaw qualifying as a freshman!

CONGRATULATIONS to Joanna on a fantastic season and to Cassie for her incredible run through the IHSAA post-season thus far ... with one more exciting race to go!!

Cassie will race at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute next Saturday in the IHSAA STATE FINALS! Girls start at 12 ET. LET'S GOOOOOOO!!!!!

Boys

Lopez stepped up to the start line on Saturday with 174 other competitors sharing the same goals ... PR and advance! Through the first mile, Felix was in GREAT position within the pack of runners laying it on the line for a shot at state! The second mile ... which includes a sandy trail through the woods and "Agony Hill" ... pushed our him back a bit further into the pack. In spite of running his heart out over the last mile, it was just too much to overcome against the best runners in the northern part of the state. For the boys, the top 10 individuals qualifying for state all placed in the first 18 finishers - WOW!

Felix finished 47th overall ... an improvement of over 50 places from last season! He was also 9th among all freshman and sophomores competing!! AWESOME! Even though this brings an end to a terrific sophomore year for Felix, his performance on the state's 2nd largest stage should be both satisfying and motivating when thinking about what might be possible in the next 2 years!!

Check out what the NWI Times had to say about Saturday's IHSAA Semistate @ New Prairie!

Football

Friday night on Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard, the Brickies welcomed Gary West Side for an IHSAA Sectional 17 quarterfinal matchup. The Cougars entered the contest with a record of 7-2 and riding the legs of NWI's leading rusher Camajay Griffin-Terrell, who was averaging nearly 200yds rushing per game, to help West Side score .... points per game.

Hobart got the ball first and drove across midfield. On a 3rd down with 6 yards to go, sophomore QB Noah Ehrlich hit classmate Connor Stafford for a 35-yard TOUCHDOWN!!!!! Less than two minutes into the game, the Brickies led 7-0! On Hobart's 3rd possession of the contest, our boys faced a 4th & 2 from the 50-yard line. A handoff to senior back Trey Gibson turned into an ELECTRIFYING play when Gibson broke a few tackles, stayed on his feet and scampered into the endzone for another TOUCHDOWN!!!! WHAT A RUN to make it 14-0 Brickies!!

The very next play provided even more fireworks. Hobart tried an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff, but West Side scooped up the ball and raced down the sidelines for a score to cut the deficit down to 14-6 and give the Cougars a jolt of momentum. Any hope that West Side had for a comeback was quickly squashed by Gibson & the Brickies when Trey powered through another hole opened up by the Hobart O-line and rushed 42 yards for a TOUCHDOWN on the 1st play of the 2nd quarter!!! Over the next 12 minutes, Hobart would score 10 more points on a 39-yard field goal from senior kicker Ryan Pimentel and a 1-yard plunge from Gibson - his 3rd TD of the game - to take an impressive 31-6 lead into the halftime locker room!!

Gibson would score one more time in 2nd half to lead the Brickies to a 37-6 VICTORY!!! For the game, Trey carried the ball 29 times for a RIDICULOUS 239 yards. Possibly even more impressive than what Gibson & the offensive line were able to do was the show put on by the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE!! The Hobart D held Griffin-Terrell to a mere 50 yards in the first half and the high-powered Cougar offense without a score the entire game!!! WOW!!

With the win, Hobart advances to the semifinal round of IHSAA Sectional 17! The 7-3 Brickies travel to Highland next Friday to face the Trojans with the winner moving on to the championship round!!

THANK YOU to NWI Life for always doing such a great job covering high school sports!

The Boilermakers Local 374 Blue Collar Player of the Game from Hobart's sectional opening win over West Side goes to the entire Hobart defense! The Brickie defense shut down a West Side offense that averaged close to 40 points a game, as West Side's only score came on special teams! The Brickies kept the dangerous West Side rushing attack in check, helping punch Hobart's ticket to the semi-finals!
