Week of April 30-May 4

A note from Mrs. Trujillo:

I have begun testing the kids on their DRA (developmental reading assessment) for the last time this school year. It will take me a couple of more weeks to get them all done, but once I have them done I will send their score home. We will also be doing our math benchmark test for the last time early next week. This will be the third and final time we take that assessment as well.

Last week in Thursday folders, an enrollment verification sheet went home to every child. I need these papers signed and returned ASAP. It is important that we get them back so that our school can start making preparations for next school year.

This week will be a busy one. We have a Manyawi informance Tuesday morning. On Thursday, we have spring pictures and an author visit from David Titus. If you want to order spring pictures, be sure to send in your order form by Thursday. Friday will be a hat day. We will also have Super Kids Day that day, and during Good Morning Monroe we will have our Volunteer Appreciation assembly. If you have volunteered in anyway possible this year, please attend this assembly. It is meant to honor all of our wonderful Watch Dogs, Homeroom Moms, Monroe Champions, parents who have taken things home and done them there for us, or anything you have done to help out in anyway possible!

Please be sure to turn in your Principal's Reading Challenge reading log this week! We would love to see Dr. Connery work on the roof!

This week in class...

We will finish working on Unit 7 in math this week. We will have our Unit 7 assessment this week. The concepts we will cover this week are:

  • Attributes of 3-D shapes
  • Partitioning Rectangles
  • Array Number Stories
  • 2-digit subtraction with regrouping

At home, please practice counting change, and getting change back with your child. This is an everyday skill that we are working on in class, and working on it at home, and in the "real world" could be very beneficial. Also, working on telling time with an analog clock, and asking questions like "What time will it be in two hours?" helps reinforce skills taught in class. As always, practice with addition and subtraction fact fluency. A good way to do this is through Xtra Math.

This weeks literacy concepts are:

  • Sound of the week: short vowel digraphs: ea, ou, y
  • Story Genre: Expository Text
  • Comprehension Skill: cause and effect
  • Comprehension Strategy: make predictions
  • Grammar: contractions
  • Mechanics: punctuation
  • Writing: opinion writing/poetry

Please continue to do Smarty Ants at home with your child. The skills your child learns in this program go right with what we learn in class. It really is a great tool, and on top of it, it is fun and engaging.

Social Studies/Science:

We will continue working on a new unit in both social studies and science, which go hand in hand. We will be working on map skills. (how to read a map, compass rose, directions, map key, etc.) We will also begin learning about Earth events and changes to the Earth. We will learn about events and changes that happen quickly (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) and events and changes that happen slowly (erosion). We will also learn about different landforms on Earth.
