Mike Powell Introduction
Teacher, Coach, and so much more!
Social Studies/SPED Teacher at Nuernberger Education Center, a part of LPS
I started as a full time teacher this past school year at the Don D. Sherrill Education Center, which is for students that have behavioral challenges that need to focus on building these skills. These students have struggled in their Lincoln Public Schools home schools, and work to transition through us, back to their home schools. At this last building, we had Pre-K through 8th grade. Our middle schoolers (which I teach) are moving to a new building this coming year.
Football Coach, Lincoln North Star HS
I am entering my 17th year of coaching football... all but 2 at the high school level. I have also coached at the semi-pro and professional indoor level. It's safe to say I love the game! I played collegiately at Nebraska Wesleyan University and played 8 years of semi-professional football in Nebraska and Michigan. I also coach track (shot put and discus) at Lincoln Southwest and I have been a wrestling coach and swimming coach as well.
I am the father of four and grandfather of FIVE!
Son D.J. and his wife, Elizabeth!
Just married January 9th, 2016 and so proud of both of them! They just welcomed baby Max in December!
Daughter Betsy and her husband Stewart and family!
First grandchildren and I try and spoil them whenever possible... not a problem, right? Just added another baby, Benson, in December!
Sons Matt and Nick (with D.J.)!
Basketball has been a huge part of Matt's life! He was a four year varsity player at Lincoln Pius X and named Honorable Mention All State his junior AND senior years!
Nick is a senior at Lincoln Southwest and participated in sports until an injury to his back his sophomore year, which has limited his participation. He's the baby and he takes advantage of it as best he can! ;)

I am a graduate of Western Michigan University!
I started my college career at Nebraska Wesleyan University, I did some coursework at UNL, but I completed my teaching degree while living in Michigan at WMU in Kalamazoo, MI. I substitute taught and coached while completing 110 hours of coursework and driving 100 miles per day!
I love the Oregon Coast
I have been here quite a few times, but it's still not enough... If I can retire there and still see my grandkids as much as possible, that just may be in the cards!

Learning and Goals for the course...
I am getting my SPED endorsement through UNK to continue teaching with our program we have at Nuernberger. We do good work... I feel it's a good fit for me!
I love reading and I love learning. I would say I learn in a lot of different ways. I learn by reading, I learn by doing, and I do much better as I get older at learning by lectures or presentations.
My goal for the course is to better myself by learning more strategies to help me in my classroom with my students. I want to help them and I want to do my best to meet their individual needs.
