First 1/2 Day of School - Q & A
Hello BCS Families!
We are filled with excitement (and relief) as we near our launch! :-) Below find a quick Q and A regarding all you need to know about our first half-day. These expectations apply to all BCS students: Grades 3/4,5/6, and 7/8.
When does our first-day of school, Monday, August 31 begin and end?
BCS Students should be available on Zoom from 8:15 AM-11:30 AM on Monday, August 31 for our first ½ day of school! Initial materials will be distributed during our Drive-Thru Days on August 27 and 28.
What behavior expectations exist in our virtual learning environment?
Please remind your child that the BCS dress code and school rules are in effect in their virtual classrooms. Click the BCS Student Handbook for more information on our school rules. Teachers will review additional expectations for participating in online learning activities.
Which Zoom link should I access for the first day of school?
All students will meet with their Homeroom/Academic Lab teacher via Zoom on our first ½ day, Monday, August 31st. For a comprehensive list of Zoom links by Homeroom/Academic Lab teacher, click BCS Teacher Zoom Links.
What if I do not know my child’s homeroom or academic lab teacher?
You can find this information in PowerSchool. You will also receive a detailed schedule with the initial pick-up materials during our Drive-Thru event on 8/27 and 8/28. If you still have questions, please reach out to a member of our BCS staff.
What supplies/materials does my child need for the first day?
A tech device with a camera to engage with Zoom. Supply lists and initial materials will be provided during our Drive-Thru event on 8/27 and 8/28.
Will my child be expected to sit in front of the screen from 8:15-11:30 AM on August 31?
No. Teachers have planned a variety of activities with time to connect, engage, and take breaks.
What will my child do on the first half-day of school?
Teachers are planning a variety of engaging back-to-school activities. The idea is to build community, get comfortable with some of our virtual tools, and connect with one another. In addition, teachers will help students understand their digital weekly schedule.
What do we do if we run into technology issues from home?
As this is an initial launch, we anticipate families may have issues as we start. Should that be the case, please reach out to your son/daughter’s teacher via e-mail. We plan to be understanding and flexible as we adjust.
If students are having trouble logging in to Schoology or if they found that upon entering, there were no classes, please contact the Help Desk at HelpDesk@birmingham.k12.mi.us or at (248) 203-3123.
What about Schoology?
More information about Schoology, our learning management system, is forthcoming. Our district is creating informational guides to help you and your families navigate Schoology with ease. It is not an expectation that you or your child is familiar with Schoology just yet.
Thank you for taking the time to review these guidelines. We are looking forward to a great first day! If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to one of us.
