Dr. Lawson has served as the Executive Director of the Houston Public Library (HPL) since 2005. The Houston Public Library is the largest public library in the state of Texas, serving over 2.2 million people through a network of 42 locations. It ranks seventh among the largest public library systems in the Nation. A strong and passionate advocate for public libraries, Dr. Lawson is keenly focused on ensuring that public libraries remain highly visible and vibrant organizations that positively contribute to the quality of life in their communities. She ensures that the HPL system is continuously evolving and moving forward a comprehensive, innovative platform of library services and programs to meet the rapidly changing needs of Houston residents and the virtual environment.
The Library aggressively promotes its vast resources through, exemplary customer service, strategic partnerships, and strong community engagement. Under Dr. Lawson’s leadership, HPL has earned over 40 prestigious local, state, and national awards for services, programs, innovation and building projects. Active on the local, state and national levels, Dr. Lawson serves on a number of professional and civic committees and boards. She holds a BA from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, an MLS from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in Madison, Wisconsin.

4th Annual Career Development Symposium
TAKE CONTROL and drive your career forward. City employees who are seeking encouragement and empowerment to take personal responsibility for career growth are invited to attend the 4th Annual Career Development Symposium.
The Career Development Symposium is an annual open-house training event for City employees, held in collaboration with our strategic partners. Every year, this event is organized to assist you on the road to career success by providing career tools, academic resources and professional development opportunities that will support the achievement of future career goals. You will gain access to workshops facilitated by career professionals and career counseling provided by our partnering educational institutions. The one-day event is intended to expose you to information that will incite career readiness, encourage career planning and provide educational resources to support your future goals with the City.
