Welcome Back!

Welcome to a new year! We hope everyone had a safe and restful winter break. After a two week break it has been uplifting to see so many smiling faces as our students return to their classes. It is truly a privilege to serve this community and we look forward to continued partnership in the year ahead.

Wash your hands.

Wear a mask.

Watch your distance.

Stay safe everyone!

District Breakfast/Lunch Resources

Any family with children 18 or younger is eligible for free meals during this time. You can pick up meals at Oak Terrace between 10:30-1:30 Monday-Friday, or you can sign up to have the meals delivered directly to your home while everyone is remote! There is no registration needed to pick up meals at Oak Terrace. This program is for all our families and is funded regardless of number of students. Your participation does not 'take away' from others being able to participate.

If you'd like to have the meals delivered to you, see the information below:

Please complete this form to join the program.

Deliveries of breakfast and lunch will be twice a week, Mondays (2 days worth) and Wednesdays (3 days worth).

  • As new families apply for delivery, they will be added to the route for the following week.
  • When we are back in person, remote families will still be eligible for food deliveries, and hybrid families can still pick up meals at Oak Terrace.

iREAD (Virtual) - Let's Do This Sherwood!

We are excited for our annual iREAD competition from January 9th through February 3rd. District 112 students will compete to win a trophy given to the school who reads the most minutes. Let’s work together to have Sherwood win for a 5th time!

Please keep track of minutes read each day on this Google doc and submit your form to your teacher. We would like every student to participate by reading and submitting their forms. You can access all of the links to the iREAD forms and info HERE.

Here are Sherwood’s iREAD details for this year:

  • Our theme this year is a “star” theme: PANDA STARS SHINE BRIGHT
  • Join our district iREAD Kick-Off on Saturday, Jan. 9th:

Listen to staff read stories by accessing our Sherwood staff read aloud link.

Storyteller Paddy Lynn will be performing via Zoom at 10:00 AM. REGISTER here.

Pick up a Grab and Go craft kit from the HIghland Park Public Library from 11:00-5:00.

  • Sherwood will have a STAR DAY Kick-Off on Monday January 11th. Students are invited to dress like a star (movie star, sports star, singer, etc.) or wear YELLOW and wear sunglasses at the beginning of class for a class photo. We will share them on Twitter with these hashtags: #PandaiREADStars #PandaStarsShineBright

  • Mrs. Weiss will again host early morning “Wake Up & Read Days” for students to read and count the minutes read before school begins. They will take place on Fridays from 8:00-8:30 AM. Use this Zoom link (Passcode is PANDA) to join virtually on Fridays during iREAD (while we are learning remotely.) Students are invited to read in fun & cozy ways including: in their pajamas, with a pet, with a sibling, with a flashlight, with blankets & pillows, wearing mittens and hats, by a fireplace, etc.

  • Bookmark Design Contest: Use this template to design a bookmark to go along with our star theme or iREAD/reading theme. Share your completed bookmark with Mrs. Weiss ( hweiss@nssd112.org) by February 1st. We will share the winning bookmarks from K-2 and 3-5. Prizes will be awarded to the winning contestants.

  • Top 10 Readers: Our top 10 Star Readers will receive a medal with their names laser engraved on them. Will you be a Top 10 Reader this year?

  • New this year: “Flat Stanley” Pandas: Get your panda here. Print, color it and take photos with your Flat Panda reading with you, playing or out and about with you. Share your photos with Mrs. Weiss.

We are looking forward to a great iREAD year! If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Weiss at hweiss@nssd112.org.

Griffin's Tales Extension - Feb. 1st

Calling all authors! We have something special to share with you! Griffin's Tale is coming back in action this spring...virtually!

This year, all stories will be considered for Griffin's Tale's series of virtual shows. These will be posted on their YouTube channel throughout April and May 2021. Griffin's Tale is planning on posting 7 filmed and edited 30-minute shows, each including 4-5 children's stories. Stories may be adapted into songs, skits, raps, whatever our ensemble thinks best honors and expresses the story! All content will be filmed in a way that prioritizes the ensemble's safety in this time.

All stories will be submitted directly to Griffin Tales using this form. (Please also access the Story Identification Form located in the form, too.) Submissions are due by Monday, February 1st.

So, what are you waiting for...grab a pencil, or Chromebook, & start spinning your own creative story! Let’s laugh with literature at Sherwood School! Please feel free to reach out to Valerie Kilen (vlariviere@nssd112.org) with any questions you may have. For more information about Northwestern's Griffin Tale program, visit https://northwestern.campuslabs.com/engage/organization/griffinstale.
