News and Notes from Mrs. Shivers's Class
Grades Updated
After a couple weeks of illness, both at school and at home, I can finally say with some certainty that grades are updated in Skyward. As of today, there are three and a half weeks until the end of this quarter. Please remember to check your child's grades through Skyward, as hard copy report cards will not be sent home.
Art Festival This Weekend
This year's Art Festival will be held Saturday morning, from 9am to noon. The festival is $5 per student, due to Mrs. Bataoel by Friday.
Units of Study
Last week we took a practice test to check our progress in learning our states. I'm pleased to say that the whole class did very well! Most students can now identify all 50 states and many know their state capitals as well. Our final test will be given on March 2nd.
We are wrapping up our study of World War II by writing research papers about various key people, events, and support tactics that played a role in the success of the Allies.
Our next unit of study will focus on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
Math
We are continuing to learn the basics of Algebra by writing and solving one-step equations. This week we have focused on equations with a real world context. Next week we will shift to inequalities.
Reading
Students should be continuing to read regularly at home. In sixth grade, students are expected to read at least 1 independent book per month.
When writing about their thinking, all students should be able to justify their thinking with their own words as well as a specific quote from the text. Examples of reading responses are posted in Google Classroom.
