Welcome Back!

We hope families had a nice break and enjoyed their time together. It was great to see our hallways filled with students again Wednesday morning and students eager to see their teachers and friends. Our next PAC meeting is on Thursday the 12th at 5:30pm. We encourage anyone interested to join us! They’re always fun and offer an opportunity to learn/hear about the great things happening at Hawks View. Additionally, it was great to see many of our families at MOD Pizza this Wednesday for Dinner Night Out. Our next one is Thursday the 17th (Joe’s Burgers) and we’d love to see even more of you there! Dinner Night Out and Bottle Drop are two easy ways to support our school!

Tardies

Prior to winter break, we were seeing a high number of students arriving late to school. Tardies impact both students and staff and cause a disruption to the learning environment. Students arriving after 7:55am will be marked tardy. As part of our district attendance plan, we are working hard to minimize the number of absences and tardies. If your child would benefit from any sort of support in getting to school on time, please reach out to our counselor, Sydney Allred (shustler@sherwood.k12.or.us).

We understand that car line can back up in the mornings. There are several things that help make our car line run more efficiently: Having your student’s backpack and lunch ready to go, ensuring students can exit the car independently, and pulling all the way forward in the car line to allow the maximum number of cards to unload at once. When these things happen, we notice a dramatic difference in our line and our ability to get kids in the building quickly! Thank you for your help with this!

Food Services Update Reminder

Our elementaries will begin serving peanut butter & jelly sandwiches in the cafeteria starting in January 2023. The item that will be served is a Smucker's Uncrustable, a pre-packaged option. This means that there will be no risk of cross-contamination in the kitchens for students who experience peanut allergies and participate in school lunch.

Your children's safety is our highest concern. Safeguards will be in place so that students with peanut allergies will have an alert on their account, preventing them from being served an item containing peanuts. If you have any questions about our cafeteria processes to prevent cross-contamination, please contact Nutrition Services at nutrition@sherwood.k12.or.us. If you want to discuss concerns about your own child's allergy with our Health Services Department, please contact health@sherwood.k12.or.us.

When to Keep Students Home

With the influx of illnesses in the community, we would like to share a reminder of when to keep your student(s) home. Click here for the flyer from the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority. This information is also available on the District Website under the Health Services Department tab and then policies. Please help us keep our families and staff healthy!

Free Dental Screenings for Children Age Seven and Younger

Dear Parent/Guardian: We will have free dental screenings by local Dentist Dr. JJ Bittner and/or Dr. Kendra Flann at Hawks View Elementary on February 17th, for children age seven or younger who have not been to a dentist. This is a screening only and no treatment will be given. You may already have turned in a form to your school to say that your child has been to a dentist, or that the screening is against your family’s beliefs -- if so, your child will not be screened. If your child is screened, results will be sent to you in backpack mail and also go into the student file. If you wish to opt-out of the screening, please contact your school office.

For more information about the screening call Health Services at 503-825-5088. Good dental care contributes to the overall good health of our students!

Resources for Parents of Early Learners

Are you the parent of a child age 0-5? If so, please see the flyers below for more information on upcoming events specifically for parents of early learners!

School Board Recognition Month

The Sherwood School District is joining Oregon's other 196 school districts in celebrating January as "School Board Recognition Month." As volunteers, our school board members spend countless hours year-round working to serve the students, staff, parents, and community members of Sherwood, with a focus on providing the best possible education opportunities for K-12 learners in our district. Please join us in thanking our Board of Directors for their dedication and service to our schools!
