BHS Cheerleaders Earn State Championship for Second Year in a Row!
Meet School Committee Member Amy Grohman
Though born and raised in Denver, CO, Amy Grohman has always felt like a New Englander at heart. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Russian Language and Literature from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. Amy moved to Maine in 1999 and has lived in Biddeford since 2003 with her husband, Martin. Together they have two kids attending Biddeford Middle School--Hannah (8th grade) and Henry (6th grade).
Amy worked for 20 years in the non-profit fundraising field writing grants, managing capital campaigns and overseeing annual fundraising efforts for a variety of social service, arts and education organizations both in California and Maine. After a few years working part-time in the Biddeford School Department while her kids were younger, Amy decided to switch gears and is currently a Project Administrator for Tilson, a Portland-based company that provides network deployment, IT services and consulting to commercial and government clients across the country.
“I view being part of the School Committee as a great way to continue to stay engaged with the schools,” said Amy. “It is yet another way to contribute to my community – something I feel very passionate about. I also serve as a member of the York County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation, Board President of the Heart of Biddeford, and board member of APEX Youth Connection.”
Outside of work and volunteer activities, the Grohman family enjoys skiing, hiking and mountain biking, spending time at their camp in Western Maine, and exploring the woods and beaches of our beautiful state.

2020 U.S. Census - Get the Facts
Each decade, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a count of every person living in the United States as mandated in the US Constitution since 1790. This data not only serves as the basis for distributing federal assistance to schools, including Title I funding (to help low-income families), the National School Lunch Program, and special education grants but also determines the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives.
"The 2020 Census is your census, and its success depends on you. It’s a once-in-a-decade chance to inform how billions of dollars in funding are allocated for critical public services like hospitals and health care clinics, schools and education programs, roads and bridges, and emergency response for the next 10 years," explained Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham. "We are encouraging people to respond online, by phone or by mail."
Superintendent Jeremy Ray adds, "According to a recent report, Maine received over $4 billion dollars for federal programs guided by census data, including $56 million in special education grants and $34 million for school lunches. As a district, we rely on census data when submitting grants as it is the most trusted source available. Therefore, it is vital to have an accurate picture of our community. If we don't have families accounted for, the data ultimately has an adverse effect on funding for the decade ahead."
Schedule of Census Roll-Out:
- March 2020: An invitation to respond online will arrive in the mail.
- April 2020: Census Day on April l and includes a national attempt to remind everyone to complete the census online, by phone or by mail. Additional reminders will be sent to homes.
- June -July 2020: Census takers begin to go door-to-door to count people who have not responded. Census takers are Census Bureau employees and will provide proof that they are official government personnel.
- December 2020: Census Bureau reports population count to the President of the United States and U.S. House of Representatives' seats are calculated.
Responses can be entered online or by phone in 13 languages or via the traditional paper questionnaire. For more information, visit the Census Bureau website at census.gov.
