Update from Dr. Mason to the Brea Community
April 24, 2020
Dear BOUSD Community,
We continue to be touched by the ongoing support our remarkable community continues to provide the District. We truly appreciate everyone’s willingness to make the health and safety of our students, staff, and community our top priority.
Interim Grading and End of the Year Activities
We come to you today to ask you for your continued understanding as the Board of Education and District Leadership work together with staff, students and families to make thoughtful decisions on important topics such as interim grading policies and end of the year activities including alternative plans for graduation and 6th and 8th grade promotions ceremonies. Additional information on these decisions will be provided to families in the coming week.
Summer programs and the 2020-21 School Year
You may have heard that Governor Gavin Newsom recently unveiled California’s Roadmap to modify the Stay-at-Home Order, which describes six indicators that must be met before the order can be modified. Based on this information, the Governor and the California Department of Education have advised K-12 schools to have plans in place for extended distance learning into the summer and possibly the fall. Governor Newsom’s plan states that it will be safe for schools to return to normal (pre-pandemic) operations when all the following have occurred:
- The California stay-at-home order has been lifted
- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Orange County has remained constant or declined for 28 consecutive days
- The directive to physically distance has been removed
- Limits on group gatherings have been lifted
We realize this information is difficult and hard to process for our students and families. We want to be honest that while we do not have all the answers to every question, we have an amazing team of caring educators who are here to help answer questions and concerns. We completely understand and empathize with any frustration you may feel during these uncertain times and encourage you to keep those lines of communication open with teachers, counselors and site administration.
Please know that we are committed to planning for the future of BOUSD with our students’ and staff’s health, safety, and best interests always on our minds. Thank you again for your continued grace, patience and resilience.
Sincerely,
Brad Mason, Ed.D.
