The Hasty Howler
March- Parent Engagement Newsletter
From the Principal - Dr. Rosario-Regan
We hope that each one of you had a wonderfully relaxing and fun Winter Break with plenty of opportunities to build deeper connections as a family. It is unbelievable to me how quickly the year has flown- and that March is already here. It won’t be long before the warm weather arrives, and the end of year madness begins!
This is a busy time at Hasty of learning and preparation for the end of year testing. Our students are working very hard to learn what they need to prepare not only for testing, but also to be ready for the following school year. Please make sure your child is at school and on time each day (unless they are sick) so they don’t miss any important class instruction.
We also have lots of fun things happening this month. We will celebrate Read Across America and several of our School Partners and School District Personnel and Board Members will read to our students virtually. Additionally, we have a District wide Math Challenge during the month of March, and we ask that you encourage your scholar(s) to get as many minutes as possible on iReady.
Lastly, as a reminder, don’t forget to spend some time reading to your child every day. The time spent one-on-one between parent and child during reading helps children form a positive opinion about reading that will last throughout their childhood. Therefore, by establishing a routine in which reading is an essential part of the home environment, children are more likely to read for pleasure. I want to thank parents for reading with their child for at least fifteen minutes nightly.
I encourage our families to stay connected with Hasty through our social media platforms. Follow Hasty on Twitter (@Hasty_Huskies) and Facebook (Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy) to stay connected with the many exciting things happening this school year.

From Your Parent Engagement Facilitators - Mrs. Shipp & Mrs. Tatum
Dear Hasty Families,
Spring is in the air and we are excited as we begin to plan for the 2022-2023 school year. As part of the planning process, Hasty uses an annual survey to gather parent feedback about the current Parent Engagement Program. Parent Engagement includes the many resources available in the Parent Resource Center as well as events such as Parent Academic Data Nights (PAD Night), ESOL/Technology Night and STEAM Night.
Please note that the survey is completely anonymous and should only take about 5-10 minutes for you to complete. Your particiaption is crucial and your feedback is important.
Lastly, don't forget to mark your calendar for Thursday, March 24th for Hasty's first annual STEAM Night. This family event will give students and their families the opportunity to participate in activities that incorporate science, technology, engineering, art and math. It is sure to be a fun event for everyone!
As always, thank you for your commitment and dedication to your student's education. The work we do at Hasty would not be possible without you!
Sincerely,
Luciana Shipp and Paige Tatum

Nurse Tips
Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall. They are more likely to participate in physical activities, and to maintain a healthy body weight. Eating breakfast helps a child's attention span, concentration, and memory—all important for learning in school. The reason for this is our brain requires food for fuel, just as our muscles do. While our muscles can use stored energy from food we ate yesterday, our brain prefers energy from food we have eaten recently. When there is not adequate glucose, or blood sugar, for the brain to use as fuel, we don't concentrate as well or feel as alert. Eating breakfast ensures that blood sugar levels return to normal after the long time without eating while you were asleep. This is why you often hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Some great breakfast foods are listed below:
Carbohydrate-rich breakfast foods
- Oatmeal
- Whole wheat bread, pita or tortilla
- Corn tortilla
- Fresh or frozen fruit
- Whole grain cereals (low sugar)
Protein/fat energy supplier
- Peanut butter
- Eggs/egg whites
- Canadian bacon/ham
- Beans
- Almonds/nuts
- Avocado
Carbohydrate + protein
- 1% or skim milk
- Low-fat Greek or plain yogurt
- Low-sugar fruit yogurt
- Reduced-fat cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, etc.)
Breakfast is also available every day at school prior to the last bell ringing.
