6 Major Principles
FAPE
Free Appropriate Public Education
Requires schools to provide meaninful educational benefits to prepare them for further education, employement, and independent living at no cost to parents.
Appropriate Assessment
Schools must conduct evaluations of students that are suspected of having a disability. Assessments should be nondiscriminatory and multidisciplinary.
Parental Involvement
Parents should participate in placement decisions and have the right to be a member of any group making decisions for their have the right to refuse further evaluation of their child.
IEP
Individualized Education Plan
A written document that uses evaluation information to meet a student's unique educational needs. The IEP also includes updates regarding student performance and particpation in the general classroom.
Least Restrictive Environment
Students must be placed in the least restrictive environment that a student can be satisfactorily educated within.
Rights under Federal Law
These safeguards protect parental access to information regarding student placement. They also create precedures to resolve disagreements between parents and students regarding student placement.
