Hall Counselor Corner 2020-21

November 16th

Welcome to week 9 of the 2020-2021 School Year

What is Respect

The month of November the school is focusing on the character trait of respect. While the word respect may mean different things to each person, respect is essential for our relationships. When received from others we can gain a greater sense of safety, self worth, and trust in others. We must have self respect - which is caring enough about ourselves to consider how our words and actions impact ourselves - and respect for others - which is caring enough about others to consider how our words and actions impact them.

How do you show respect in a relationship? Here are just a few ideas.

  • You know it’s ok for both of you to express who you are.
  • When you disagree you listen to each other and be patient.
  • You don’t yell or talk over the top of each other.
  • Neither of you are controlling the other person’s choices.
  • You both talk openly about your needs and wants.
  • You both allow the other person space if they need it.
  • You can both admit when you’ve made a mistake.

What about self-respect? Well here are a few ways to show that as well.

  • Give your body what it needs - healthy food, sleep, water, and exercise.
  • You accept yourself for who you are.
  • You recognize your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Seeking help when feeling overwhelmed.
  • You are okay with making mistakes and trying again.
  • You have friends who treat you well and make you feel good.

What does respect mean in your home? What does it mean to your child? How do we respect ourselves? I would encourage you to have a conversation and find out!

Below is a link to many resources which have been provided by the Gresham-Barlow School District. There is information regarding meal distribution, housing help, mental health resources, and childcare assistance.

Please reach out if you are in need of anything and I can help you to navigate the resources available to us and find the supports you need during these times. You can also fill out our Resource Request Form and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
