A Message From the Superintendent
Governor Abbott made an announcement today that students would not be returning to classrooms for the remainder of this school year. Since spring break we had made our plans around this type of decision. Until today, I felt confident that we were prepared and making the right decisions. When the Governor made his announcement about students not returning to school I don’t think I have ever felt more helpless in my life.
I do want to make sure and clarify that the Governor did not end school for the current year. His executive order stated that students will not be returning to school buildings.
Kindergarten online pre-registration is now open. More now than ever, it is important for us to begin collecting information about the upcoming school year, so that we can begin making good decisions. Below you will find more details concerning how to register your child.
We are waiting to make a decision concerning our graduation ceremony. I would hate to postpone the ceremony prematurely only to find out that we could have had a more authentic graduation ceremony. Districts that are proactively making decisions concerning their ceremony are having to choose virtual and drive by ceremonies. My plan is to monitor guidelines by our federal, state and local officials in order to determine the capacity we could potentially hold with such a ceremony. My hope is that some of the restrictions will loosen so that we can have a graduation ceremony that somewhat resembles our traditional practices.
Every morning our campuses are on Facebook live giving daily announcements and saying our pledges. This is a great way for our students to stay in contact with our staff. I believe that our in-home learning program has made tremendous improvements given the timeframe in which we had to create it and the resources available. I also know that for some parents this has been a major adjustment and one that hasn’t been very easy. We have created grading policies that will allow for maximum flexibility this semester. Our ultimate goal is that students are engaged in the learning process. It will be very difficult to catch our students up next year if they aren’t engaged in any type of learning between now and August.
The Food Service Department will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch to kids 18 years and under, Monday through Friday at the Primary campus from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm and at the Leaders Core Park on Denson Drive from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Kids must be present to receive meals.
The situation we are currently in is a very difficult one. I do know that we will make it through this situation and the number one priority should always be the health and safety of our communities across Texas.
Go Panthers!

Friends of Texas Public Schools
Dear Friends,
During this very unusual and uncertain time, let’s take a moment to celebrate something most of us have taken for granted our entire lives... our public schools and professional educators! They have always been there for us with their doors and arms wide open, and even amidst this great challenge we are all facing they find a way to continue serving their communities. Following are just a few highlights among their innumerable academic achievements this school year.
Sincerely,
Leslie & Scott Milder

NE Texas Poetry in Schools Contest Winner
Every year, Young Audiences of Northeast Texas, Rusk County Poetry Society, and TEA Region VII Service Center co-sponsor the Northeast Texas Poetry in Schools contest. “The contest aims to provide students with the opportunity to express themselves through writing, but also to learn about the art form of poetry and using language to its fullest potential.” Each year, hundreds of students from dozens of schools all over northeast Texas submit poems for consideration. Judging is done by writers, poets, and educators.
I am excited to announce that Spring Hill 6th grader Hailey Hooker placed first, with her poem “The Last Time,” out of 131 entries in her grade level. Hailey’s poem was a poignant reminder to treasure every moment, as time deals us “lasts” regularly and often unexpectedly. Hailey is continuing what is fast becoming a tradition of outstanding 6th grade Spring Hill poets, with Panthers having garnered 2 first place, 1 second place, and 1 third place awards in the last three years! Hailey will have her poem published in the 2020 Anthology with winners from other grade levels. Way to go Hailey. I’m so proud of you!
