Learning to Read is like Learning to Ride a Bike
Reading doesn't happen naturally, yet we expect it like learning to walk.
- It takes skill and strategy.
- Some learn faster than others.
- Some will always need support.
- Learning will be disrupted by other factors.
In education, students are expected to read between kindergarten and first grade. Reading benchmarks expect ALL students to be on a certain level at different points of the school year. As educators, we know that students all learn to read at different rates and there are many factors involved. The biggest challenge is having a secondary student or English Learner that is a struggling reader, or doesn't know how to read.
Below you will find resources for the classroom teacher, intervention, and parents. Please note that several of these resources include passages on a wide range of lexile levels.
