Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA)
Dear Panther Cub Families,
All students in grades 3-5 will be taking a new test this Fall called the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) as directed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). The VGAs were created to help measure growth in reading and math for students in grades 3-8. Although these tests will measure the same content as the Standards of Learning (SOL) reading and math tests given in the spring, students will not be given a passing or failing score. These tests will be used to establish a student’s baseline proficiency in reading and math and then track their progress during the school year. You can read more about the test by clicking on the link below: https://www.pwcs.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=340225&pageId=45154951
This is a secure test that will be administered at school during class.
ALL IN-PERSON STUDENTS IN GRADES 3, 4, 5:
- Tuesday, September 21st: Reading Test
- Thursday, September 23rd: Math Test
- Friday, September 24 for the Math Test (3rd, 4th, 5th grades)
- Monday, September 27 for the Reading Test (3rd, 4th, 5th grades)
If your child is virtual, we ask that you bring him/her to school at 10:00 a.m. on the day of the test. All PWCS COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. All students will need to wear a mask. Students will be seated a minimum of 3-feet distance from one another. Free lunch will be available to any student who would like it. We will call you when your child finishes the test for you to pick him/her up.
Please help us stay safe and healthy by keeping your child at home if he/she is not feeling well and let us know. We will arrange an alternative testing date. Contact Mrs. Garcia, Assistant Principal, at8 school or by email, garciakv@pwcs.edu if you have any questions about the VA Growth Assessment. Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Danna B. Johnson, Principal

Many students are grieving what has been lost during COVID-19 closures—chances to socialize with peers, be a senior in middle school, start kindergarten, or participate in sports or performing arts. This month's Report to Parents offers families tips to help their children overcome school transition-related challenges this year, which can be particularly hard for grieving students. MWES receives additional school funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)
- Academic Support - Focused
- Social Emotional Support - Universal
These additional funds will allow us to provide high dosage tutoring, extended learning opportunities, additional staff to help with these opportunities, and funding for incentives, supplies, and training for teachers on social and emotional learning.

Key dates to remember:
Event Day - 9/22
STUDENT DROP-OFF/PICK-UP
DROP-OFF
Please use the car rider lane to drop off students. Do not park/idle and let students out to walk through the parking lot unaccompanied. Your child should be directly supervised by a staff member. This is for your child's safety! We will continue to remind you as necessary.PICK-UP
Please pay careful attention to the staff members in the pick-up lanes and follow the instructions they give. We will be moving cars up further in the car rider lane starting on Monday, 09/13, to try to accommodate more people in the line. Hopefully, this will alleviate some of the back-up that occurs as cars line Panther Pride Drive.
Remember, we will no longer dismiss students at the front of the school between 3:15 - 4:15. We simply do not have enough staff to monitor multiple dismissal locations. Parents who are picking students up should remain in their cars in the car rider lane. We apologize for the inconvenience, but if we all work together, everyone benefits and every child is safe!
Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility as we continue to re-work our dismissal process for maximum efficiency.
