Main Characters

Bruno: He is a young 8 year-old German boy that is forced to live by a concentration camp because of his dads job as the commandant of Auschwitz. He is a boy full of questions and wants to become an explorer when he is a adult. Bruno is very adventurous, often gets into mischief and trouble.

Shmuel: He is a Polish Jew who is forced into a concentration camp and split up from his parents. He is Bruno's exact age, he has a brother named Josef, his father is a watchmaker, and his mother is a teacher. Shmuel is very quiet, and wants to work in a zoo because he loves animals.

Gretel: She is Bruno's older sister, She is only 12 year-old and loves the Nazis and everything they stand for. Her love for dolls is expressed by the large and abundant collection of them that cover her room.

The main conflict though out the book is the growing relationship between Bruno and Shmuel and that they should have never been friends because of there differences and the Nazi belief. Jews were seen as a unproductive part of society and a nuisance to the country even the world.

Who Would Like This Book?

This book was great. It was a heart felt story that is not a good selection if you looking for a funny or happy book. I think that I would recommend this book to just about anyone, especially a person who likes to hear people's survival stories. I would say you would want to be a little older like 13 to understand this book but besides that its a great novel and i would highly recommend it.

Did I Like It?

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas is such an educative book and really gets to you emotionally. This novel opened my eyes to history and how people were treated, it showed me just how innocent Jews were and how the people on the out side were shielded from the truth. Every young person should read this book and anyone who wants a new perspective.

Short Passage

"He looked down and did something quite out of character for him: he took hold of Shmuel's tiny hand in his and squeezed it tightly. "You're my best friend, Shmuel" he said. "My best friend for life."

I think this is important about both the character Bruno. Through all he has seen and been told he ignores what people tell him and sees Shmuel for who he really is and considers his his best friend. The strongest part to the passage is when he says "My best friend for life." This show how much Bruno cares and just bruno considering him a friend means the world to Bruno.
