Magee Girls on the Run
Our last few weeks!!
This Week!
What's the Scoop?
The girls had SO many insights - and really picked up on the subliminal or underlying messages in ads. "If you drink this, you will be skinny and beautiful just like this lady." They talked about how a drink could not do that to someone and maybe there were "side effects" to the drink that were not being talked about - THAT was AWESOME! The picture below was discussed - why did they have to put such a short skirt on her (was a question asked) and "who" is this really being sold to? (SO INSIGHTFUL!!)
We talked about how we are each unique - and that the point of ads is to SELL something. Most things that are purchased will not change who they are on the inside! What a great conversation!
Last week's lessons focused on "Beware of Bullies" and "It's Okay to Choose our Friends!" The SBLR strategy - Stop, Breathe, Listen and Respond - was reviewed. The girls are getting really good at this! As coaches, we discussed ways we can, do and should apply the strategy in our everyday lives - it's not just good for kids! Ask your daughter to talk with you about it!
It's all about the fashion!!
What WILL we wear??
**Please note - the girls should wear their YELLOW GOTR shirt for RACE DAY TOO!! - We discussed the possible need for QUICK laundry turn around from Sunday's race to Monday at school!**

Coaches and participants DO NOT need to pick anything up at the regular registration table inside the rotunda, even if you are a running buddy. You should proceed outside to the square to meet your girls. Please don't plan to meet your team inside the mall, as it only adds to congestion in the registration area. On the square, there will be signs for each site (see attached map). At your site sign you will find a bag with race bibs and pins for your girls, medals for the girls, and colored hairspray. Coaches do not need bibs. Girls and coaches should wear their GOTR program shirts. Girls do not receive an additional t-shirt on race day.
Gather your team, hand out race bibs and bracelets (see below) and give them last minute race reminders. If you need any additional pins or medals, stop by the Information Table outside Devons, as they'll have extras. Once your girls have checked in, they are free to visit the expo in the mall rotunda, take pictures at our photo station, etc. We will have fun kids' activities such as face painting, tattoos, hula hooping, jump roping, etc. There will be several sponsors set up just outside the rotunda (weather permitting) and many will have little freebies for the girls.
Please have your team gather back at your site sign outside on the square by 8:40 for opening ceremonies. Teams will be announced and your team can cheer when they hear their name. At the end of the opening ceremony, all teams will move to the street behind the stage (Center Pkwy) for the start of the race.
The starting in WAVES is new this year. Waves have nothing to do with running time, and are simply in place to relieve congestion on the race course! We will cover this with girls too! The 5K is all about everyone doing their best and having fun. It is very important that walkers stay to the right and runners pass on the left.
When all of our girls have finished, we will gather back at our site to give girls their medals. This WILL NOT happen at the finish line - to avoid congestion. If your family needs to leave promptly, or there is inclement weather, we will give them to the girls at our Mindful Monday Assembly on Monday, November 14.
