Curriculum this Week:

Reading- This week we will be implementing our Reading Groups into the Daily 5. Students will still have the option to choose between Read to Self, Read with Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading but they will also participate in reading groups that are on their instructional level.

Math- This week students will be placed into new Flexible Math Groups based on their division pretest. It is extremely important that students are in the math group that they will be most successful in. Students will begin learning about division, long division, and the big 7 method (can be found below).

Writing- Students are finishing the Revising and Publishing steps of the Writing Process. Once finished students will begin writing new narrative stories.

Social Studies- Students will continue to explore and learn about the Lost Colony of Roanoke on the North Carolina coast. Students should have finished their Discovery Education boards and will begin researching in small groups using books that Mrs. Allbach has chosen for us.

STEM- We will be participating in our 3rd Sphero lesson with Mrs. Eggett. This has been a wonderful experience and I am excited to see what the students learn next!

Hour of Code

This week students around the world will be participating in the Hour of Code. All students will be learning how to code, simple computer science strategies, and how to use math with technology. We will be participating in many activities this week both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.

Just Say Hello Campaign

Our classroom will be working on a special project that is sponsored by O magazine and Skype with their Just Say Hello Campaign to help put an end to loneliness. We will be brainstorming to come up with a topic that we can implement at Claxton in order to help students who are feeling lonely. We are only in the beginning stages of our project, but it needs to be implemented and up and running by January 16th.

Please check back with your child to check on our progress!

Division: Big 7

Below is a video to show the way we will be teaching long division this year. It is not required that students can do the traditional algorithm until they are in 5th and 6th grade. So, this year we are teaching students how to solve long division using partial products in a model of The Big 7. From experience, we have found that this helps students to not only complete problems, but also to understand them. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
