Murray's Gifted Gab
April 2018
A Note From Mrs. Shook
Good morning! I am currently at the state level competition for Science Olympiad. What a wonderful opportunity for our students. I love watching students compete, brainstorm, and problem solve. I am also thankful that students have opportunities like this everyday at Murray.
The next few weeks will fly by but they can also be stressful for students. Yesterday I met with some staff to talk about how they can support our gifted students. So many of our students are involved in Science Olympiad, the Shrek production (tech week...need I say more?), sports, and other extra curricular activities. It is important for staff and students to teach our students how to manage their stress. One technique is to talk about "your hula hoop." Everything that is inside your hula hoop is what you can control (your emotions, your reactions, your contributions, etc.) and everything that is outside of your hula hoop is what you can't control (your group members, EOGs, etc.). It's so important that students recognize what they can and can't control.
On May 30th, we will have an informational meeting for our current 7th grade parents and students. In the past, we have been able to offer online classes through North Carolina Virtual Public Schools. The county has not determined the budget for these classes yet and we will need to make some changes. I will discuss these changes at our meeting from 5:30-6:30 in the media center.
Thank you for all that you do to support gifted education!
